And finally, it's moving day

Original post made on Oct 27, 2010

After 14 years of moving between temporary locations, it was a big day for the Day Worker Center of Mountain View on Wednesday. Two large trucks arrived at its new permanent home, full of donated furniture handpicked out of the now vacant offices of pharmaceutical giant Roche in Palo Alto.

Excellent article!
One note to add is that the Day Worker Center is open every Saturday as well, 7 AM - 5 PM.
Thank you,

So citizens of Mountain View can go for lunch and a free check up or treatment? Awesome! Where do we sign up?

That's great for the day workers, because who doesn't like free stuff?

But not so good for the people who own houses near that corner. Guaranteed increase in crime there.

It's also a convenient walk to Rengstorff Park, ground zero of gang activity in Mountain View. And a short walk or bike ride (with no bike light and on the wrong side of the street of course) to the Rengstorff/Escuela/Latham block that features 2 7-11's and almost nightly gang violence.

Now all we need is a low-income housing project, a marijuana dispensary, and a high-speed rail depot with a 2000-car parking lot to make the town of Mountain View what it always wanted to be!

Federal law prohibits the employment of those that do not have a right to work in the US. The "Day Worker Center" is an illegal enterprise and should be closed by the Mountain View Police as soon as possible.

The center should be closed down and the illegal workers arrested and deported.

I agree, shut it down and DEPORT NOW. Nothing but trouble brewing. Let's

I'd like to see ALL out of work construction workers show up there
and take their jobs back.

Nothing like cutting out the unions and licensed contractors. Wouldn't it be interesting if someone took pictures of those picking up these guys for a day or a week? Any one hiring any one from this place should be reported to the state contractors board and pictures are worth a thousand words. The MVPD will not get involved and that's been backed up by their captain. This is a problem faced by the workers displaced by people more than likely in the US illegally.

Hey Mountain View Voice...why don't you do your job and take pictures of those fine citizens who are hiring illegals for slave wages? They should all go to jail. If the Voice won't do it maybe the Palo Alto Post will.

@Ron:
Standing around all day taking photos of all and sundry doesn't really fall under our job description.

Er... like the photo of a couple of guys moving furniture into a Day Worker Center that employs illegals?

That is too bad that people can determine people's legal status based on physical appearances. I am appalled by such ignorant comments.

Is this center open to anyone that wants work, or just members of a certain ethnic group? I ask because I have a good friend who is struggling to stay afloat in these difficult times. He's a native-born American, though.

I have seen Asian, Caucasian and African American at a Day Worker Center neighborhood open house. Hispanic's are by far the largest population there, but all are welcome from what they said and what I saw.

"Day Worker Center" is a euphemism or code word for Illegal Workers Center. To prove this, do workers show right to work in the USA, i.e. an American passport?

Americans need to stop talking about this and actually DO something. And shame on our elected representatives for not protecting the rights of the Americans - native born or naturalized. This center is a slap in the face to legal and law abiding citizens in Mountain View.

We can't blame the illegals who take advantage of the system if WE allow it to happen.

Andrea, taking pictures would fit your job description as part of a news story. It IS newsworthy that there is an Illegal Workers Center. Who funds this? Who employs the workers? All of this is newsworthy. Yet the media choses not to write these stories, which makes them complicit in the problem.

I moved here from Michigan and I was amazed by all the illegal workers who are so boldly in the open not to mention centers that take care of them. As someone mentioned it is against the law to be here illegally and hire illegal aliens. Yet we are a lawless society where laws are not enforced and our society as a whole as well as individuals are suffering.

If one wants to help people from other countries, give money to charities, go on mission trips to foreign countries. But don't be a boundary-less and lawless state.

I'd expect this false nationalism anywhere else in the US, but in Bay Area? Guess you cant buy class. To quote South Park... "THEY TOOK OUR JAAAAAAABS"

Exactly what employment services does the day worker center provide that is not provided at the dept of social services on Moffett Blvd at Central Expwy? Just asking 'cause if the answer is a free lunch, it would have been alot cheaper to just bring the food to the dept of social services.
