Original post made on Oct 13, 2010

A man wearing a mask and wielding a handgun attempted to steal cash from a Mountain View liquor store Friday, but settled for a portable hard drive and empty laptop case instead.

Great description of the perp, really useful. It's a shame he didn't get a face full of wasp spray for his efforts. I gave a can of Ortho Home Defense ($5.99/can at OSH) to my favorite convenience store owner.

Another reason why law ABIDING citizens should be able to obtain CCW permits easily and carry a gun!

Agree with Gunner

I agree with Navy_Gunner and BD. Criminals like this will always find a way to access guns, they don't care whether the guns are legal or not. When is the rest of society going to realize that.

The article says nothing about the robber bringing a gun or having a gun. I am not sure why the gun-obsessed BD,Gunner and MVNative all rattling about owning a gun or firing a gun,etc...
DO you violent people want to shoot someone because he/she trying to steal somethings? I agree stealing is a felony and there are violent criminals in our society. But exaggerating everything to the worst scenario shows how gun supporters will kill anyone for a minor offense.
Do you all really think somebody who is trying to steal hotdog or a soda or a beer from a 7-11 store deserves to be wounded or killed?

come on,now, what is the diff between you and a terrorist? I thought we are a society of decent people.apparently, you 3 are excluded now.

jupiterk, the article did say "gunman" in paragraph 4.

That being said, Gunner, BD, and MVNative, do you really want to escalate the theft of $140 worth of property into an armed stand-off, or worse, a firefight?

Moreover, unless you plan on requiring people to take regular tactical handgun practice, I think an armed, out-of-practice citizen trooper is at least as dangerous as an armed criminal. I doubt that your average person can get an accurate double-tap on a range, much less under combat conditions.

Wasp spray is good. It's quieter than a gun, certainly cheaper, and vastly more effective than pepper spray. Ortho Home Defense foams on contact. It's excellent. I keep a can in the car and a couple at home.

The use of wasp spray for self defense is an urban legend, sorry. Look it up. Use pepper spray. It's legal, and it actually works.

"A man wearing a mask and wielding a handgun attempted to steal cash from a Mountain View liquor store Friday" That's in the first sentence. I don't think the article could have been clearer than that...he was seen wielding what appeared to be a gun.

"Urban legend"? It worked pretty well the last time I used it, which is more than I can say for pepper spray.

Of course, I'm not advocating breaking any laws, here. The only self-defense that Santa Clara County allows non-corporate "persons" to carry is pepper spray. Remember that, citizens! The glorious state retains a monopoly on violence.

Not a fan of CCW.

Wear it on the belt with your bullets, like the old days.

If you want or feel it necessary to be packing as a deterrent, wear it in the open; and it will deter.

Concealed carry is just waiting for someone to lose their temper and cap someone in an alley.

The story would have likely be more horrible if there was a gun/gun confrontation involved.
Only 140 bucks lost and video evidence? Not bad at all.
As a citizen who could have been walking past that store with my son, I'm VERY glad there wasn't some gun nut ready to go all wild west to protect 140 bucks but risk human life in the process.
The clerk should be rewarded for how he handled the situation. Very good!

WOW this WASP spray MYTH is getting old!PLEASE stop spreading this you sound very uninformed. STICK WITH THE PEPPER SPRAY before somebody gets seriously hurt. Police departments worldwide use pepper spray because the inflammatory effects of this agent work on those which cannot feel pain (very important). The inflammatory effects of pepper spray cause eyes to close involuntarily and produce a loss of breath sensation. Pepper spray has been proven effective on deterring and incapacitating aggressive, combative, intoxicated and drug induced individuals for over 20 years.
To date, no human testing has been conducted on WASP spray and it’s a violation of federal law to use in self defense. There are many home defense pepper spray options which will deploy up to 25 feet and unlike WASP sprays, these pepper sprays do not require the user to be as accurate because their spray pattern will cover an entire doorway. Pepper spray is a safe, proven option which is trusted and relied upon by police officers worldwide.

Why don't the people who own the fence behind Clyde's Liquor store install some barbed wire on top of the fence slats. This is the third time in less than two years that a criminal has hopped that same fence. Having friends in that area causes me to worry about their safety. At least if some sort of sharp metal was installed on top of the fence, it would deter the robber and at the same time the police would be able to obtain some DNA.
Is it against the city ordinance to add a line of barb wire directly on to the top of the fences behind the serveral business along El Camino Real? Especially those businesses that are directly in front of residential back yards and apartment buildings. Something needs to be done for the safety of all.
Clyde's liquor store should look into this safety alternative!
