"The window had been broken out of the door previously but had not been fixed."

Never have a window in or within arm's reach of an exterior door. And always encrypt a notebook's hard drive.

Same thing happened to me two years ago. They used a lawn chair to get up and break a locked window, climb in, take my laptop and go out the back door. I guess with a lap top someone can just walk down the street with it and it doesn't look suspicious.
