Teenagers may have to find another place to play "Babe Ruth" baseball if the wishes of a concerned group of Mtn. View residents come true. The Water District hosted a meeting at our public library on Sept. 9th to discuss plans to lower McKelvey field 15 feet as a flood basin. The vast majority of attendees were from the neighborhood between the park and El Monte Ave (St. Francis Acres). Comments made by the group included: That the lighted games go on too late; The scorekeeper's public address speaker is too loud; The attendees speed down their streets and also take up parking spaces in front of their houses; and it was stated that drugs are sold at the park. There seemed to be a consensus that the redesign of the park should be viewed as a "clean slate", that is, a time to start from scratch. The new park would include an area for Little League, a playground for youngsters, a parking lot along Miramonte Ave. (not by Mtn. View Ave.), and the remainder of the park would be "open space". McKelvey would be transformed into a neighborhood park. It was proposed that a field for teenagers (7th grade and up) should be built at Shoreline Park, though it is uncertain how the players, with working parents, would get to a field miles from its current location. Little League and Babe Ruth representatives were present and advocated to have the big field remain at McKelvey, but they were far outnumbered.
