Morning car crash causes road closure

Original post made on Sep 8, 2010

The northbound lane of Shoreline Boulevard, between Latham and Mercy streets, was closed for about an hour Wednesday morning, as crews worked to clear debris left after a Cobra kit car ran into a tree on the median.

I was one of the first people at the site after the crash (just around the corner from our house). The man was driving recklessly, burning rubber, etc. It is fortunate that all he hit was a tree. Stupid and irresponsible.

A fool and his Cobra kit car are soon departed. And so it is in this case. A case of justice served by Darwin's Law. *Sound of gavel*

I witnessed this accident yesterday morning. I think the driver was going a bit over the speed limit when he skidded out of control and hit the tree. I cannot believe he is in stable condition, considering how his car seemed to come apart on impact; his teeth were smashed on the steering wheel, his car seat was bloodied by this facial lacerations, and he was partially out of his car (I don't think he was wearing his seatbelt) when we reached him.

Even though the Shelby Cobra is a "dream" car to many, including many of the officials at the accident scene, I don't think I could get a car with no impact airbags - especially after seeing the results of this accident!

I did not see the accident only the damage to the tree later on. I am a local Cobra owner and yes they can be a handful for those who do not have on track experience. Long and short of it, I hope he is ok. Does anyone that saw the crash have additional details, such as color combo of the car? I am concerned that it maybe one of our local club members of friends.

I rolled past the scene of the accident yesterday morning and it was evident that the driver hit a tree and high speed. I'm glad he's okay, and hopefully his missing teeth will be a good reminder of his reckless and irresponsible driving.

Thanks for making me late to work Cobra driver. The next time you crash due to your irresponsibility and showboating you might take someone with you. Shame on you. Shame on you.

Cobra's are not tree dwelling creatures, they lay in the dirt and the dust and muddy garbage at man's feet - because snakes are the lowest forms of living creatures.

For the person wanting to know the Cobra's color combo, it is solid black, no stripes. It had the typical Cobra trunk and hood badges, also the 427 badges on the side front fenders, although it is a smallblock, not a 427. Hope this helps.

To hamburgerdan,

Thanks for the response. We are trying to figure out if its someone in the car club or not, as there are not that many of these things out there. Did you see the car, and if so any idea what brand? Thanks. Also thanks for posting one of the few helpful and productive posts here.

You miss the point Andrei. The way you frame things here, if it's one of you club members, you all need to slow down. Go to a race track, and don't use public streets.

No Mary,

I do not miss the point. Only one person, not even the police stated that speed was a factor. The point is that nobody knows if he hit something, had a mechanical failure, a medical emergency, etc. Everyone is so quick to jump up on their soap box and preach without any real facts, thats my point! A human being was injured and without any other real information that should be the focus.

I saw the damage while waiting in the attendant traffic jam. Considering that it is a kit sports car, the horrible damage sustained, and that no other cars were around, I conclude that excessive speed/reckless driving played a role in this accident. Shame on all of you.

shame on all of you!! my nephew could not drive his jeep to work that morning because he had a flat tire. the cobra was having "a little" clutch trouble the last time he drove it. he was going to take it to the shop to get looked at. he was not speeding! the "little" clutch trouble was not so little. i'm not from mountain view; sure sounds like you people jump to ill conclusions before you know any facts.

Was the foot he had on the accelerator broken as well? Was his brain broken?

Shame on all of you. He consciously got behind the wheel of a sports car with a known mechanical defect that resulted in him losing control. Praise be showered upon The Lord that nobody was crossing the street or climbing in that tree. Next time call AAA.

Kathy,

I apologize for the way some in the community are acting. I hope he is going to be okay. If there is anything we can do for a fellow Cobra owner contact us or at least update us on Clubcobra.com. I have an active thread on there.

Boy, some of you can be brutal. The guy lost his car and was hurt in the process. I think he has suffered enough at this point, not to mention the fact that the police could cite him for it as well. If he had a mechanical issue or if he was driving recklessly... whatever. I think he is paying for it and thank God no one else was hurt.

Andrei,
Yes, I saw the car. It is a square tube car, not round. The first name of the driver of the car was "Sean". Hope this helps. Hey, wonder if all the whiners out there would still be attacking this person if the vehicle had, instead of being a Cobra, been a Prius driven by some leftwing tree hugging whacko? Hmmm? Seems to me I have had to wait in traffic for the PD to clear the road due to accidents caused by dumb driving being performed in all types of vehicles. Really, I think that these people were just scared by the mighty rumble of this American Muscle car, probably made them wet their pants in front of their latte drinking friends and they were embarrassed for being such weenies. No doubt that is what happened.

Hamburglerdan-
I would be equally offended by a Prius driver endangering our lives and making us late for work. Has nothing to do with the over-compensating, midlife crisis induced, bought-already-assembled "roar" of the cobra's small block engine.

Let's hope none of you ever lose control of your car and hit a tree. It would be a tragedy if rude individuals who were late for work wrote nasty comments about you. Especially, after they made their own assumptions and judgements. Let's hope.

aight. for all of those people saying what happened. ALL YA'LL ARE WRONG. what REALLY happened was me and my friend were walking to school down latham towards church street. we pressed the button for the light and it was clear so we went halfway. then we went all the way across towards church street. the dude in the black car with his top down was coming from el camino and was at first in the lane closests to the middle. then when he saw us walking he decided that it would be a great idea to switch to the lane closets to the sidewalk which me and my friend were still in. he decided to speed up hella fast and "try" to scare us and he was going at least 60mph. so me and my friend put our hands up n started yelling at him saying wtf is your problem? at that time he decided 2 try 2 come back towards us, flip a u-turn and attempt 2 go the wrong way back towards us. he ended up trying 2 flip around without slowing his car down which then he lost control and his car made screech noises we turned around and saw him crash into the middle island and hit a tree. his car went up at first and then backdown. over 100 pieces small n big flew off the car. then it started smoking, and thats when my friend called 911 to tell them that the guy hit a tree and was injured. we left because we had to go to school. i aint trying 2 be shady but he shouldn't have tried to go the wrong way and speed up to hit us. ironic i think. anywho, hope that he is okay and learned his lesson. so all yall can stop pretending that you guys know when you dont.

EY DUMBASS fran! I FIRST find your comment offensive and your an idiot. it is dumb people like you that assume things and judge people that dont even have the slightest idea. i find it offensive because i am half black and half mexican, not illegal and educated. oh, and FYI, the driver...was a white male.

I was really trying to keep a distance from this until I heard about the drivers conditition, which is the most important thing here, but had to reply to some more of the idiots. So do you really think the tire & oil companies love cars that get driven 1k miles per year max and get trailered the most? I think they thrive off of the dipsh#ts that bought Prius's thinking they were saving the world by driving a car several hours a day per commute, which is totally irresponsible!

Again people, Leave race and pre judgmental comments out please. It is not productive whatsoever.

I hope Sean, if that is his name, is ok and recovers from his accident. The rest of you, unless you witnessed it or have driven a Cobra or are formally trained on the race track, just shut up! You really have nothing productive to add.

Typical self-styled "race car drviers'. Just because you think you've trained on a race track makes you above common sense when it come to driving on public streets. How many times have we heard that one before.

I spoke with the tree this morning and he's okay. A lot better than some of these knuckleheads posting nonsense. Take a lesson from a tree; enjoy the breeze, feel the sun on your face, and chill out.

I heard the crash but did not see the crash (I was just around the corner and was one of the first people to arrive at the site). I heard the sounds of very loud engine revving as he burned rubber. This supports the report posted by DONT WORRY ABOUT IT that the driver was accelerating quickly and trying to flip his car around. I'd be very interested to read something more detailed and factual about the actual circumstances of the crash.

I'm glad the driver did not die in the crash. I'm glad he didn't hurt/kill others. And I'm also glad that he won't be menacing the streets of Mountain View with that Cobra kit car anymore. His high-speed antics in that car were not unfamiliar to the neighborhood. You always heard him coming even when he was a block away.

Seriously? is a registered user.

You people disgust me. I have known him my entire life and DONT WORRY ABOUT IT...you are full of it. Yes, he could have been driving fast, but he would NEVER turn around and pull that kind of stunt. Stop slandering good people, get out of your mother's basement, and stay off the internet.

You all sit here and spout off about how reckless he is, how he...blah blah blah. You know nothing, nothing except for what liars and a short news article told you. Why don't you go back to your pathetic lives and bother someone else. He is one of the hardest working, most caring people I know. So, before you go making snap judgments because of an ACCIDENT, the causes of which you have no idea, why don't you take a look at your own lives. Why don't you think about what this would do to your family, your friends. Then you can come on here and slam him some more.

He's doing fine by the way, although I am sure most of you don't care about something as trivial as that.
