Kindergartner Ava Taylor, 4, gets an uplifting hug from big sister Ellie, 7, as brother Silas, 6, looks on. It was Ava's first day of school at Mariano Castro Elementary School on Monday, Aug. 23. All over the Mountain View Whisman district students headed back to class after summer break.

The start of the school year has brought congestion to our roads due to change of schedule initiated by the Whisman School district. Grant road starting from Bryant Road all the way up to El Camino Real has turned into a traffic gridlock this week thanks to the new change of school start time. Huff, Bubb and Graham all start at the same time this year. Access to Grant Road between 7:30 in the morning to about 8:20 is at a standstill and again between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m. Cars block intersections hoping to gain another minute so their students are not late for school or not paying attention to allow others access to the Hospital.

What are your thoughts? Can the city evaluate solutions to this problem? This is dangerous and environmentally not healthy for our community.

I am with you 100% - it is a mess. I called the MV police today as most of the congestion is caused by blocked intersections. They have a hotline and if the police receive enough complaints they might take action - place an officer at the intersection in question or monitor the situation....
In any case call: 650/903-6344
If nobody complains nothing will change.

I don't think this is strictly an elementary schedule problem. Traffic has been bad there for a while due to high school student traffic and just one way in to Huff. It may be worse now, but you can't pin it all on the elementary schedule change.

I called too. I hope the police department does something about this.

You would think the school districts, the city and the police would have already worked together on this. You would think. But don't count on it.
