They should be cracking down every day not just once or twice a year. A day doesn't go by where I don't see someone driving who is paying no attention to the road while their face is stuck in their cell phone texting or talking.

...and swerving all over the road, too, while doing it. I'm sick and tired of it. I'm surprised no-one's been shot for doing it, endangering the wrong person at the wrong time...with the right firearm. I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

I agree. This is an everyday problem. And it is getting to be a larger problem every day that goes by. The whole texting "era" is out of control. I see them driving and texting, and a clerk at the cvs downtown was texting as I waited to ask a question. Social skills are going away.

I have been putting my phone in the trunk or back seat while driving when I forget to grab my hand free device. Lets put flashing lights on cars when people use phones their light flashes. .........Stay Clear, on the phone!!

Sure. And they'll only get a small slap on the wrist, so will be right back at it after the cop releases them. Penalties need to be more severe.

A report I heard on TV news station had an interview with a CHP Sergeant who said the typical fines for these tickets are on the order of $250, depending on court fees and penalty amounts.

What should the penalties be to change the behavior?

Since all studies indicate that it is as bad as drunk driving, make the penalties identical.

NW Resident - Then it is time for you to find a better news source. Because Section 23123(b) of the California Vehicle Code clearly outlines the fines at $20 for the first offense, $50 for all subsequent.

There is no great response to this article or comments, but I would certainly support a citizen's initative to reverse the legislative ban on cell phone use while driving. I think we have a solution to a problem that does not really exist with the current law.

that $20-50$ dollars does not include the fees. It comes out to just under 250. I got one; which I deserved.
