Navy: Hangar One's contaminated cork walls must go

Unless NASA Ames takes on the responsibility of dealing with some newfound toxic dust, it appears that the U.S. Navy is moving full steam ahead in tearing down some historic cork walls inside Moffett Field's Hangar One.

If the cork walls are 6 inches thick, and the frame will be preserved, then there must be a way to safely mill an inch off both sides and still have a 4 inch thick cork panel. It will be uncontaminated and it will look brand new.

Why not seal the walls with a clear coat of varnish, to seal in the contaminants?

"Historic cork walls"? Really? Seriously? It's really stretching the definition of historic. Why should we spend public money to preserve a room most of us have never seen or will see, inside a building that the public is rarely allowed to enter?
