City puts broader phone tax on ballot

Original post made on Jul 28, 2010

The City Council voted Tuesday to have voters decide whether the city should extend its phone tax to internet phone services as well as interstate and international phone calls. Businesses using VOIP could see a significant increase in their taxes, but average residents won't see much difference, city staff says.

This is another good example of why we need a simpler, 'flatter' tax code... little taxes here and there to raise money for 'general government'.

Wise up Mountain View, VOTE NO on any tax. It's for your benefit, it's for theirs.

I'm not filled with confidence that the city of Mountain View has any clue about how to determine what portion of your traffic consists of voice communications, versus streaming media or home-server activity. How would the tax conceivably, as Woodhouse claims, "exclude Internet access, e-mail services and digital downloads"?

What about VOIP over a DSL line? A DSL line requires a landline, and anyone who has a landline already pays tax on it, regardless of whether or not they use voice services over the internet connection.

Without clarification of these points, the obvious vote is "no".

If this was not so sad, I would call it a laugher. Putting this on the ballot seems more like uninating away the dinero than anything else.

"Our revenue is at risk, so let us tax you more. But at the same time, we have enough to spend $14 million on a bridge to the Stevens Creek Trail."

Where do we find these people?

An outdated tax that council thinks will raise revenue with a broader definition of telecommunications.
