This story really needs no comments...It speaks for itself.

I try an avoid this cross-street as often as I can as when walking west towards the library, there is a blind spot as there are parked cars that obstruct oncoming cars from seeing pedestrians. Even when cars see me on the crossing area, they rarely stop (then it's time for me to pull out that mean looking stare). Forget crossing at night, that's a death-trap.

Light this area up city government or better still, install a 4-way stop; or do you want this to happen again?

I do not allow my kids to use this cross street by them self, as I have almost been hit twice by car,s that did not stop or slow down.
It's like trying to cross centeral express way. Please do something
about this before someone else gets hit.

I live on California Street. There is a blind spot at California and Franklin streets. Parked cars can block the view of a pedestrian. On the other hand, this woman should not have left the scene in any circumstance. What would be her excuse?

Hit and run accidents are becoming entirely too common. I hope the maximum penalty is invoked here upon conviction.

I think some of the more dangerous crosswalks in MV should be outfitted with the flashing orange dots that run the length of the crosswalk lines and help alert drivers to a pedestrian about to cross.

I believe that Sunnyvale installed these at Evelyn/Murphy as part of their revitalization of Murphy Ave and I've seen them in other communities as well.

A lot of hit and run drivers have two strikes, have outstanding arrest warrants, or are illegals.

The pedestrian was doing everything right by walking in a crosswalk. Was the woman on a cellphone? How could she not see the poor guy? Her leaving the scene was no doubt because of fright & flight. She wasn't ditching her responsibilities; she just couldn't believe it happened and wanted to 'safe.' I'm glad she got caught, yet now there are two families torn to shreds.

It is a very dangerous crosswalk, but people should be safe on them, so the city should make them safe.

The city has unlimited money to pay 180K pension to a librarian, millions in overtime pay to fire fighters, police and other city employees. Who knows how many millions the city manager and the attorney and other high level officials take home. When it comes to making improvements in the roads,parks,etc..for the citizens, they take years and decades to allot some funding. The city officials act very fast when it comes taking care of corporations like Google or certain relgious groups.
The city is run by rotten people. Manuel Enos died because of the negligence of the city and the driver.
For the driver not to stop and take care of the person she hit shows how heartless our society has become.

I am going to be doing a video analysis of this intersection this evening in my capacity as a private investigator, and will submit my results/findings to the city in the hopes that the city will put in a 4-way stop sign. At least that will help somewhat, I hope.

Its a tragedy indeed. Just about 2 hours ago my son almost got hit by a car while he was walking in the new crosswalk on Rengstorff at Stanford. If not for his agility to get out of the way, it would have been very serious. This is a new cross walk that has flashing lights.
Everyone should be cautious and more aware when driving.

I don't think the intersection needs road improvements. I think the city needs more traffic officers to get people to slow down. There are certain areas in this state where most driver's know they better follow every traffic law since they know they'll get a ticket due to high enforcement. Hey city council....more traffic officers (not just in the daytime either).

I do a lot of walking for exercise in my neighborhood and it's amazing to me that people just don't want to wait the 3 seconds it takes for me to walk half the intersection. It doesn't matter if there are light, flashing lights, crosswalks, etc., people are too damned busy to wait for a person to walk across a street. My brother lives in Portland where they are very vigilant about giving tickets to people who don't wait....and it's not a problem to cross the street there. Slap someone w/ a $120 ticket for not stopping and they'll think twice about waiting that extra 3 seconds before they can get to Starbucks. Now, blind spots and having the sun in your eyes is another matter. When the sun in setting there is no way I'm crossing California St. b/c you just can't see anything for the sun. And when you have trucks parked near the intersection, it's impossible to see what's coming. All of these things (except for the sun) can be fixed by the city...if they wanted to.

Oh, I was going to add how sorry I am for Mr. Enos' family. I also hope that the person caught gets severely punished..how the hell do you leave an elderly man in the street to die after you run them over?

Last summer there was an two-car accident partially due to visibility being blocked by a parked car near the corner of Loreto and Calderon. (Also due to a driver pulling out blindly and the other car going too fast.) The point is that the city then quickly added some red curbs to improve traffic visibility. Has anyone made a direct request to the city regarding the situation at California and Franklin? They will prioritize and respond when people communicate regarding unsafe situations

You might want to check your facts on the 180K pension. The librarian (actually the library director) worked at the library for 8 years. As she retired over the age of 60 she got 3% for each year she worked. This means she got 24% of her 180K salary which is about $45,000; pre-tax of course.

And just for the record, NO library employee EVER gets overtime.

I'm all for better marked crosswalks but the person to blame for the death of Mr Enos is in jail.

Thanks, LibraryUser for clarifying the total, total ignorance of Jupiterk. I must add that the library people, and all non-public safety, get 2.7% for each year they work, not 3%. And ignorant people like Jupiterk don't realize that public employees pay into their retirement.

Put a 4-way stop sign up. This intersection is horrible. The sun was setting and right in her eyes.

Check her cell phone records. If she was talking or texting, throw the book at her. Actually, throw the book at her anyway. What kind of person leaves a scene like that? She works 2 blocks away, she was going to drive by that intersection every day and be able to live with herself?

There are many intersections near downtown that have poor visibility and no stop signs. Corner of Oak and Villa is good example. Corner of Dana and Oak is another. I have seen so many near misses, something bad was bound to happen.

I would like to know how the police managed to arrest the driver by 11:00 P.M. - Did the driver turn herself in, or leave enough evidence behind to identify herself? In any event it appears that the police did a good job.

Is MV a hangin' town? With all this talk and knowing very little about any of this, you would think it is. Talk about a bunch of vigilantes.

Peter, the right of way for pedestrians exists if and only if the pedestrian is already crossing the crosswalk when the car aproaches. Stepping on onto the crosswalk suddenly when the car is already there gives no right of way to the pedestrian. The right of way is the car's in theses circumstancies. Many pedestrians behavior assumes that a car can suddenly stop miraculously if they decide at the last moment to step off the curb and that because they are crossing that they are right. They aren't. That is the law. I don't know the details of this case, but I have been blinded by the sun occasionally, suddenly and surprised by lack of vison by tree shades, parked cars, building projections and others. It is difficult though, in this case to believe that the driver didn't know she hit someone.

Narnia- Check out your facts- If you read the DMV handbook, you will find that the pedestrian has the right of way as soon as they indicate their desire to cross the road. I am not including a pedestrian that steps out into the street when a car is already in the crosswalk.

There is an acupuncturist named Keibun Son on California St. in Mountain View. If it is the same person, it is quite sad to think a trained healer would take off after hitting a pedestrian. I hope she pays dearly for this accident, there is know reason to leave the scene of an accident.

may be you haven't been reading the newspapers. The librarian retired at 80% of the highest salary she was making. It may not be 180K. it may be 80% of 180K. That is still lot of money. Then she started working as a consultant at $125 an hour.
The city Manager makes $300K and got an interest free loan to buy a home. Police and fire dept make tons of money (many millions) overtime.
I can only imagine the travel expenses and the perks (catering,outing,picknicking,taking care of dignitaries,etc..) the city employees at higher level enjoy. City council is out of control when it comes to spending money on their personal affairs and taking care of their good friends from big corporations. I am sure these guys won't mind spending on expensive French food and wine , $150 a head at tax payer's expense. Just ride the gravy train...

Just because the driver ran doesn't mean she was a killer or was at fault for accident. It was wrong for her to run and she will pay for that, but she shouldn't be labeled a killer until all the facts come out. There are times when a distracted pedestrian steps out in front of a car and it is their fault even if it's in a crosswalk.

We don't need another 4-way stop downtown, but I do think that we should limit parking around ALL crosswalks to improve visibility and instill those LED lights on roadways in all major cross walks in MV.

Some of the crosswalks downtown are accidents waiting to happen because the drivers view of the sidewalk is obscured by some of the street side dining areas.

Also, the lack of consistency of crosswalk design and frequency of cross walks is a problem downtown.

If you have one well marked cross walk followed by one poorly marked one, then the driver will tend to be less vigilant on the second one.

The two crosswalks within 40 ft. of each other in front of Amici's Pizza are also an accident waiting to happen if you don't know Castro Street. One of those two crosswalks needs to be removed and the remaining one needs to be upgraded with the LED crossing lights.

I see it a lot of people walking into a crosswalk without even looking if a car is coming. Blindly assuming everyone can see them.

If your a pedestrian, before you risk your life, look left, look right and look left again. REPEAT this until it's safe to proceed. Basic simple rule, if followed could save a lots of lives.

NEVER NEVER ASSUME a car will stop. Error on the side of caution. Period.

The worst senerio I've seen, is when a car in the middle lane stops and your on the side of it and don't know why it stopped, then all of a sudden you see a pedestrian, walking blinding across the road.

I think the law should be changed, the car should have the right of way. And for the pedestrian, to only enter when all is clear. If the road doesn't clear, then go to the nearest light.

Suicide- You're kidding about giving cars the right of way , right? A pedestrian in a crosswalk cannot be described as "walking blindly across the road"! Why do you think the lines are drawn on the road, if not to indicate that there is a crosswalk there? Hope I am not in a crosswalk when you're driving by!

First, I want to send sincerest condolences to the family of Manuel Enos. He was following the law by walking in the crosswalk.

This implies that Keibun Son may have been on her phone and that she failed to stop after the accident.

Fourth, it IS a FELONY to leave the scene of a traffic collision especially with injuries.

Lastly, I loath walking and driving in this city. In the past month, I have been almost hit in the crosswalk 3 TIMES and had 5 NEAR MISSES in car wrecks by Asian Female Drivers. Some were on cell phones, All NEVER LOOKED before entering my lane or the crosswalk, and ALL gave me the LOOK of "GET OUT OF MY WAY! I HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE WHERE YOU ARE!" Complete disregard of my life and the lives of others.

Keibun Son MUST have "The Book" thrown at her. She did not respect the life of Mr. Manuel Enos, R.I.P.!

21950. (c) The provisions of subdivision (b) shall not relieve a driver of a vehicle from the duty of exercising due care for the safety of any pedestrian within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.

21951. Whenever any vehicle has stopped at a marked crosswalk or at any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway the driver of any other vehicle approaching from the rear shall not overtake and pass the stopped vehicle.

21952. The driver of any motor vehicle, prior to driving over or upon any sidewalk, shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian approaching thereon.

21954. 21456. Whenever a pedestrian control signal showing the words "WALK" or "WAIT" or "DONT WALK" or other approved symbol is in place, the signal shall indicate as follows:
(a) "WALK" or approved "Walking Person" symbol. A pedestrian facing the signal may proceed across the roadway in the direction of the signal, but shall yield the right-of-way to vehicles lawfully within the intersection at the time that signal is first shown.
(b) Flashing or steady "DONT WALK" or "WAIT" or approved "Upraised Hand" symbol. No pedestrian shall start to cross the roadway in the direction of the signal, but any pedestrian who has partially completed crossing shall proceed to a sidewalk or safety zone or otherwise leave the roadway while the "WAIT" or "DONT WALK" or approved "Upraised Hand" symbol is showing.

sections, in addition and consecutive to the punishment prescribed,
shall be punished by an additional term of imprisonment of five years
in the state prison.

That 80% of her highest year was based on her ENTIRE career. She worked for 30+ years, of which 8 or so were at MV. She worked for the County, in Southern California, and even for the federal govt. And as Peter pointed out, she paid into her retirement.

However, I will agree with you on the consultant deal. That should never have been allowed. As much as I love and support the library that was outrageous.

I asked about the library's travel budget and it's $2,000 for 85 employees. Yeah, I want on that gravy train! lol

Oh, and Peter, I think that it is 2.7 at 55 and 3.0 at 60, but I'm not positive.
