Why wasn't the money recovered? It's a simple question to ask, MVPD.

So ask it.

Apparently it was nowhere to be found! Already spent? Hidden? Debt paid off? Use your imagination.

Looks like the Voice is back to naming suspects in stories about crime. Good ol' Don Frances subjectively left some names out to avoiding shaming such folk for life on-line.

Don Frances is no longer Editor of 'MV Voice'.

Yes, I know he left, and now naming suspects in stories is happening again. The last editor waffled on it citing the "journalist's dilemma".

Don is a naturalized Mountain Viewian. However, if he is caught using plastic grocery bags, he will be deported to Sunnyvale.

I'm just glad people are still talking about me.

The issue of naming suspects in crime stories did come up several months ago. Tradition holds that adults' names are released, minors' names are withheld (note that the 19-year-old here is named, the 14-year-old not). This has been the case for many decades, and was never a problem before, because after the hubbub of a story dies down, people stop talking about it -- and with print-only newspapers that meant a story effectively goes away and is hard to recall again. (Remember when Magnum P.I. or whatever had to root through microfiche files?) The Internet changed all that.

Not long ago a few readers brought this up on Town Square. (At least one of them was upset over the naming of a well-liked neighbor.) I told them they had a good point. Then another reader went ballistic and posted several over-the-line comments which I had to remove, which sort of killed the conversation. I think it's still a worthy topic, though, especially for a community newspaper.

Naming suspects or people are arrested is different than naming people who are convicted. The legal system presumes the former to be innocent and the latter to be guilty. Newspaper readers and Internet users often presume all of them to be guilty.
