If I'm not mistaken, this is the same area a kid was shot and killed not too long ago. Apparently this part of MV is owned by the gangs, not citizens. Hey police...a little help? Seems like this part of town needs a good sweeping then a flush.

Realist -- Yeah, that is the southern (western) edge of Mountain View's Little Mexico. There was a drive-by shooting/murder at that same spot a few years ago.

Little mexico needs immigration to send them all back to mexico.

Too many gangs in this area. it is time MV police patrol this area and get things under control before this part of MV becomes Juarez or Oakland. It is apparent that many of the parents of these kids have no clue or just ignore the violent behavior of these kids. Innocent peopple living in these neighborhoods are going to be victims of robberies,mugging,stabbing because of these gangsters. MV Police, are you listening?

I'm sure they're just misdirected young men. We need someone like Joe Arpaio.

Maybe the city will remember these issues and the need for more police officers on street. Not purchasing land for below market housing....where gang members usually live. At least they put the BMR house next to the police department for a faster response.

As I remember the MV Police have 5 patrol cars and this area is one that where they mostly patrol.If you notice you rarely see a patrol car in most of the areas. Iknow that in Waverly Park we never see patrol cars unless there has been a complaint about the High school kids driving.

MV police and I.C.E. both need to step it up in this situation. It's not a racist issue, it's being productive members of society and not burdening the community let alone the state with crimes and misconduct that can easily be prevented.

First... it seems the high concentration of crime in one small area and frequent occurrences can brought under control by some tactics used in much worse off neighborhoods throughout the world:
1) Surveillance cameras on every corner in the area of interest
2) Police booths stationed at key locations on Latham, Escuela, Easy Street, Rengstorff etc.
3) (ok, can't simply purchase this last one but...) Positive local influences working with the youth from an early age to teach them to channel their talents and hopes into more productive activities

Second... it's much easier to stereotype all illegals as gang-happy thugs causing all the problems and wish away the problem to I.C.E. In my experience most Mexicans living here are extremely industrious and trustworthy. Gangs, violence, and crime cut across country of origin and race. It's a culture that grows up in an area and all vulnerable youth are susceptible.

Shipping all illegals back to Mexico simply is not realistic, would implicate too many families that like the violence no more than you, and moreover the same culture of gangs, violence, and crime would simply subsume whatever vulnerable youth (white american, vietnamese, tongan, or insert-country-or-enthnicity-here) could not be shipped.

Let's focus our energies, dialogue, and resources towards solutions we can absolutely implement and in the short-term!

I'm a little surprised that there haven't been any comments indicating how ludicrous it is to entertain the idea that the three victims were NOT members of a gang. I guess it's not unusual for three teens, NOT from Mountain View - and one of the them from Stockton (gang capital of CA?!)- to be hanging out in MV?????? I don't need a badge to read between the lines on that one. (can you say 'turf war'?)

Oh great, now the slang term "jumped" is part of the English language! I guess the term 'assualted' no longer applies. Or is this part of the cultural diversity this town loves to embrace. I guess being jumped doesn't have the sting of being assaulted. We'll reserve that term for the white folk in our town. Nice to see the Voice stooping to the level of gang culture with that type of language. Since when. I guess the next time something like this happens the story will read, "a bunch of 'esses were 'kick'in in it the hood and were jumped by a bunch of homies." BTW, were these Canadian gangs that Mountain View is infamous for. I didn't catch the details on that part in this serious journalistic effort.

Arizona's the only state willing to do something about the gang problem close the borders.

I like the idea of putting up cameras in high crime areas. The 7-eleven on Latham street has always been a problem in Mtn. View! To those who suggest sending ICE to "clear the Mexicans out." [Portion removed, terms of use]. There are Russians, Indians and Asians who come from overseas to Mountain View who have expired visas or no visas at all! So when those of you who speak of sending "them" back to where ever they came from, include everyone who isn't here legally! It might just be your relatives who get "sent back".

Maybe we could get the Russians mafia to deal with the Latino gangs, but in this area I just can't envision Indian and Asian gangs.

Both 7-Eleven's on Latham street between Escuela and Renstroff are brewing ground for gangs and for them to hang out. Its just sad that nothing can or is done over the years!!!

This is why I'm not a fan of affordable housing and below-market efforts. Most MV residents pay a decent amount of money in rent or mortgage to live in the best city in the Bay Area. Why not make it harder for people who don't raise their children right to afford to live here?

- parole violation
- undocumented worker

- hoodie
- aspiring rap artist
- he was turning his life around

I work very close to where this happened, I am so NOT suprised. I like the Jennifer Taqueria next to 7-11 but I never go on weekends and im probably going to stop going all together. This is on the same corner as the dry cleaner suicide, they did determine that to be a murder suicide right? Anyway I was in the taqueria 2 weeks ago and pisa (mexicans that dress like cowboys) starting fighting in the taqueria and one pulled a knife...[Portion removed due to disrespectful comment or offensive language] . Plus all the new graffiti showing up tells me Mountain View will be like Sunnyvale real soon!

i manage to read some of the comments that some people left and the one that stood out the most was the idea of a "turf war"...come on, get your head out of your butt... i know first hand that it was in fact not a turf war. it was a case of wrong place, wrong time...and let the record show that the victims that were assaulted,yes assaulted not jumped, did put up a fight and there were more than six...the reporter and cops need to get their story straight..

Why won't they describe what the assailants looked like? In the absence of any info, I'm guessing Mexican. I want to see if the Voice redacts me.

Um guess what, my uniformed friends: Arizona laws are not going to solve the gang problem in MV because most Nortenos are American citizens and so are their parents and grandparents! (What?? How can that BE?? Aren't all gang members Mexican and aren't all Mexicans illegal?? /sarcasm) Also, most of these AMERICANS are many generations in the gang world of MV and know nothing else.

There are no quick, simplistic answers to this very difficult problem. Time to face that reality if you want to work for change.

This is so lame of the Voice. If the assailants were described, what they looked like, clothes they were wearing, etc, it might jog of the memories of any passerby that might have witnessed the group before, during or after. Instead we get nothing, and conjecture follows. In an attempt to not play the race game, the Voice ends of fueling the race game and residents are left with these types roaming the streets to target their next victim. Pointless on all sides.
