Pot club to stay open at least a few more days

Original post made on Jun 3, 2010

The operator of Mountain View's only marijuana dispensary was elated Wednesday about a judge's reluctance to immediately shut down the dispensary at the city's request.

"Mountain View residents are not going to have legal safe access to medicine anymore..."

Not entirely true. Those in need will have to travel further or have it delivered.

"They will be procuring it on the black market in unsafe conditions."

As if Buddy's is the only dispensary in the area.

"They will start growing it on their own and their homes, which will become targets of burglary and assault."

But a dispensary that is known to have marijuana is not a target? People are already growing it at home, that wouldn't be anything new.

I also liked the bit about the city using taxpayer money to shut Buddy's down. I'm outraged. Really.

How this guy made money as a corporate lawyer is beyond me. Terribly weak arguments in my opinion.

I'm VERY pro MMJ dispensary in Mountain View, but VERY VERY much against this Lucero clown who seems only to be trolling for a lawsuit.
The dispensary(s) will be here, and they'll have fair prices and will work with the city. I wouldn't give a single dime to Lucero, esp at his over inflated prices. No edibles? Sounds like a shell operation.
Patience, patients, our day is on the horizon, but Buddy's is not worth arguing over.

If you are pro dispensary, then you should not be against trolling for a lawsuit. The sad truth of the matter is that City Government is not going to stick their neck out on a line to allow a pot club in their jurisdiction. The City is doing the politically correct thing in delaying and opposing for the time being. This whole "lets study it more" is a typical City action when they really don't want to render a decision. They do it to developers all the time.

By forcing the issue to the courts, Lucero is going to get a decision faster than he can get one from the City as they take their merry time. If he succeeds and the courts rule on the matter, then Lucero will be first to market, and there is usually an advantage for companies that have that status. Also, if there is a ruling in his favor it may also prevent the City Council from having to make a decision, which I am sure they are more than happy with. They can save political face without having to make a tough decision and Lucero can get his pot club that is allowed under CA law.

Everyone involved in this drama might just turn out to be a winner depending on the ruling of this judge. Isn't political theater just wonderful!

for the small percentage of the population that require THC for pain management, there is product called Marinol.

<Cue debate about how smoking natural bud is way more effective dude>

Fact is pot smoke contains over four hundred different chemicals, including most of the hazardous ones found in tobacco.

Dispensaries are just an excuse for our large and aging hippie community to "legally" buy pot and get high.

Speaking of becoming targets of burglary and assault, it seems criminals are using medicinal marijuana offices to get master lists of marijuana users:

I don't smoke it, who am I or you to tell anyone they can't have their medicine? If everyone minded their business, this would not be an issue.

Steve -

Cannabis works amazingly well for literally hundreds of conditions -- far more than just the chronic pain you seem to think is the only legitimate use. It is truly a miracle plant for millions of users, including people with ADHD, depression and social phobias of all kinds. As far as Marinol, I have yet to hear from any patient who has found it even remotely as effective as the whole plant. Pharmaceutical companies like anything they can extract, patent and control but that doesn't mean it's an improvement on Mother Nature.

Safety: Cannabinoids are found naturally in only two places - the human body and the cannabis plant. Cannabis has no known lethal dose. There has never been a documented death from cannabis in the thousands of years of its use. As far as the claim that cannabis smoke contains hazardous chemicals, smoking cannabis has never been shown to increase mortality. A large study recently found no increase in lung cancer even among heavy cannabis smokers. Web Link

You close by attacking sick and suffering patients with an ignorant and unsupported generalization. On what evidence do you base this belief? Have you ever met anyone who uses cannabis medicinally?

Hey Steve,

Yep Marinol is avail but even my doctor said I'd be better off w/ MMJ so
he said I should try MMJ first because the marinol in his words "Is not as effective and very heavily sedating to the point of being debilitating. Where did you get your medical degree?

Also, MMJ dispensaries usually have many choices of edible product(no smoking involved). There, the dangers of smoking argument has just been neutered.
I'm sorry your so concerned with what others may be doing for whatever reason, but frankly, I think legal alcohol is far more dangerous to the society at larger (Note the all the DEATH statistics) Your thoughts on that?

You can tell the validity of a persons argument by how much they have to make up to try and prove their point or by how much they try and "deamonize" another group, in this case, people who depend on it for medicinal relief.
You don't have to use cannabis, lucky you, now go live your life and let others live theirs. When you're in pain I promise not to rally to get vicodin taken out of Walgreens, because as all the statistics show, vicodin is being heavily abused by kids and others who just want to get high.

There are not a lot of sick people in Mountain View with a desperate need for cannabis. That is a crock of manure.

None of the so-called "sick people" are in such need as to have their doctors pleading for a dispensary.

No one but people with a need to lose in life, be a loser, get high, withdraw, and excuse themselves for their failure to perform in life are those who need to get high from cannabis.

600 members - members who need a drug which should be prescribed drug?

Why aren't there Members for other drugs?

Lucero is an embarassment to the Bar. He serves himself and exploits the notion of a nauseated chemotherapy patient. Not all people enjoy the internal effects of cannabis consumption, most definitely those with acute pain and nausea. You don't hear of chemotherapy patients begging for cannabis.

Lucero's threat of MORE dispensaries is a paper tiger. There is a concerted effort by rational citizens to stop the plight of cannabis from being in and around our great City of the Peninsula.

Cannabis is not a "miracle drug." It has many deleterious compounds. It is not an analgesic, it is a hypnogogic drug. One of its active compounds, THC, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol causes the breakage of blood VESICLES, the termination areas of blood vessels. That breakage causes the release of red blood cells which carry oxygen but need to recirculate. The damage to the vesicles is what provides a BENEFIT not a cure to glaucoma by causing the release of red blood cells to specific areas of the eye needing oxygen.

It is a dangerous psychoactive drug. THC causes severe paranoid thinking which is characterized by delusional and irrational fear and anxiety. It is not an anti-depressant and it is not a tranquilizer.

The ignorance of individuals seeking to get high and justify their desire to intoxicate themselves cannot be tolerated.

This propaganda has to be countered with long established scientific facts. Oh, did you know that many compounds not THC itself but contained within cannabis block the production of estrogen which is in and of itself produced from androgen. Cannabis interferes with sexual hormone production in both female and male but more damaging in young women who are pregnant.

This concerned citizen sounds like a very angry human being. And sounds like concerned citizen could use some cannabis to relax his anger a bit.

My adult child in the last months of her life found that cannabis was the thing that helped her the most with her agitation and pain. Marinol made her feel sick to her stomach adding to her terrible discomfort. I am all for a dispensary if it can be handled well. I hope the city and Buddy's or some group can work things out for the truly ill person who finds that it helps can feel good about what they are getting and not be doing something illegal.

A six-month undercover investigation of a drug trafficking ring in San Mateo County has resulted in six arrests, the San Mateo County Narcotics Task Force announced Thursday.

Task force agents made "several covert buys" through contacts employed at a medical marijuana dispensary, task force Cmdr. Lt. Marc Alcantara said.

The six men in custody are from Mountain View, Redwood City and an unincorporated area of San Mateo County near Redwood City. They are scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon.

Charges against the men included possession of drugs -- marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine -- possession of firearms, and cultivation of marijuana.

During the buys, which were made off the dispensary premises, agents purchased marijuana, methamphetamine and two handguns, Alcantara said.

Jester - kudos to you.

concernedcitizen has every right to their voice and i support that.
i don't want someone telling me if my medicine works or not.

when im throwing up from migraines, immobile from a slipped disc in my back - I am living proof that cannabis works. Edibles help me with the pain. I can take care of my family, go to work, and i don't have to smoke it to "heal" my symptoms.
makes me sad to hear people call patients hippies who want a legal way to get high

migraines could be a result of diet, sleep apnea, or a number of things and a pain from a slip disc can be alleviated through physical therapy and exercise, no drugs required. try again.
