Foundation gears up for Monte Carlo Night

Original post made on Mar 17, 2010

Organizers from the Mountain View Educational Foundation have high hopes for this year's Monte Carlo Night fundraiser, with a goal of raising $80,000 to support art, music, after-school sports and performance electives in local schools.

This is a wonderful way for the community to support our local public elementary and middle schools. Mountain View Educational Foundation ensures that all children in Mountain View receive music and art education provided by the Community School of Music and Arts as part of their school day. In this era of declining resources in public education, I hope concerned citizens will support the Mountain View Educational Foundation through the Monte Carlo Night and through direct contributions.

I hope many people go... It is a wonderful night and fun for all. Plus, you get to bid on the silent auction and visit with many friends and interesting people. The biggest plus is the schools in Mountain View... See you there.

Waste of time folks. There is no accountability for money in this school district. Ironic that a district has to resort to gambling gimmicks to fund itself. And who says this money doesn't go to pay off the goof Ghysels to leave?

Not a dime of my money will they get.

This event is run by Mountain View parents and other community volunteers in order to bring music and art to our kids in all MV schools, and to bring some community cheer. Check out the auction catalog Web Link - lots of great value items to bid on - some brought from other continents! I ain't telling what is on my bid sheet ;-). See you this Saturday evening at the Computer History Museum at Shoreline and 101.

This is always a fun evening. And contrary to what some people are saying, MVEF's money is directly accountable: they pay for music & art at the elementary schools; after-school sports & before school music electives at the middle schools; and science supplies for all the kids. The money is not spent on anything else, and without the Foundation's funding, the kids would lose out on these important aspects of their education.

Our schools would be at a loss without MVEF! Please attend or donate even if you don't have kids in the school district. It's a fun night! My kids are in the district now but I attended even before that and had a great time. It's a VERY worth cause!!!

Watch out for Ghysels. He'll be sure to be on the prowl for the ladies at casino night.

MV Mom and Observer.... Its easy to say things when you have not the guts to give your name. I'm sorry, I don't put any stock in anonymous belittling of anyone! Time for you both to get over what ever is bothering you.
MVEF does wonderful things for our schools. Our school district is so much better off than most under Dr. Ghysels leadership...

Cheap shot, MV Mom. I agree with Marti, get over it already.

Keep drinking the Kool-Aid.

"Cheap shot... get over it already"

I will when the King of Cheap Shots is gone.

I don't want to leave readers of this forum with the impression that "Landels Teacher" speaks for me.

Speaking for myself, I love teaching at Landels. It's not perfect, (show me a workplace that is) but it is good.

I'm with you MVMOM I saw Ghysels sneaking around the district office one Saturday morning. Hiding behind sunglasses with an overnight bag getting in to a van. Landels teacher, who are you in bed with?

Dr. Ghysels apparently likes Landels school a lot as well. That's where he keeps his favorites.

Will there be chaperones on hand for the event?

Hands above the waist everyone during the dancing!

Still MVEF is a wise choice for donations since a committee of parents and teachers keeps an eye on where the money goes.

I'm going. And one of my family donation ideas for the auction, as suggested by MVEF, is:

2. Host a Party for Adults: Cinco de Mayo, Ladies Night, Game Night, Backyard BBQ, Poker Party…

I just hope Maurice doesn't win the draw on that one ;-].

As an active MV parent, I've often seen our Superintendent Ghysels helping with many activities way beyond his title and beyond what as parents we could expect of such an individual. I am profusely grateful to him for all the hard work and good spirit that he brings to our community and our schools. He is incredibly inclusive, respectful, hard working, knowledgeable, reassuring and a joy to be around. He will be greatly missed if/when he leaves.

There must be a respectful way to deal with his personal situation that happens to cross over into a professional setting. Chances of finding a partner in the work place are very high - we spend so much of our time at the work place, and I hope we can be graceful enough to allow this matter to be settled politely outside of public forums like this one, the forum that has nothing to do with his personal situation, and has all to do with my child's education.

Funds earned last night go straight to the accounting to pay for music and art for all the kids in MV elementary and middle schools, in THIS school year. I hope everyone out there supports such a worthy cause. I believe music and art will teach my kid the kinds of values, that some day, when she becomes a voting citizen, will guide her to make wise choices, for she has been inspired to higher potential via music and art that she experienced in the Mountain View elementary and middle schools.

Ghysels has lost all respect as a leader by the women he leads--the teachers.

"There must be a respectful way to deal with his personal situation that happens to cross over into a professional setting."

There is. Don't bring your wife to such events (as last year), while you are fooling around with an employee you supervise. No more lies or white lies. Get divorces first. Have one of the conflicted parties leave the district and work some where else. Be an example of an ethical and moral leader if you choose a career that involves being role models for children. Otherwise go work for IBM or Walmart where maybe you could get away with it. There's just nothing like a superintendent teaching kids to negotiate the word 'no' or how 'you can have it both ways'. How many people in life really get away with it anyway in the long run? Fair enough?

This problem was not created by the people of Mountain View. We don't have to put up with it.

This one is to Don Frances.

Don -- at what point do you decide that any future references to the Superintendent's personal issues becomes "objectionable content?" Personally, I think, while it was certainly gossip-worthy fodder for the blogs for a couple of weeks, we crossed that threshold a very, very long time ago. If people are still angry about it, they should be writing their vitriolic blasts to the school board (sorry, school board members, I'm sure you get enough of that as it is), to Maurice, or they can just email each other. The rest of us may or may not agree with the bloggers' opinions of Maurice's leadership skills and his personal integrity, but my guess is most people are just tired of hearing about it.

I also have to say that, while I was also angry and disappointed with the situation when it happened, I'm amazed at how many people have never had the experience of knowing/working with people who have left their spouse for someone else. Everyone in Mountain View must have led very charmed existences in Leave-it-t0-Beaver-land, or something. I'm always angry and disappointed with people I know and like when this happens. I was especially upset because I KNEW how much hate and controversy this was going to cause, and MVWSD has been full of hate and controversy for so many years, we sure didn't need any more.

People always hold public figures up to a much higher standard, and they repeatedly disappoint us by being human and making the same human mistakes that mere mortals make. Yes, I know, role model, etc. But the kids only found out the details about this "sordid situation" because the parents talked about it in front of them, and on these blogs. If parents thought this behavior intolerable from their superintendent, they were perfectly within their rights to tell him, tell the school board, start a petition drive, whatever they wanted to do. They did not have to splatter nasty comments all over the internet where everyone -- and their kids -- could read it.

Remember - we are the ultimate role models for our children, not Maurice Ghysels. What he did or did not do in his personal life will not have a lasting impact on the students. How we as parents handle these types of situations -- that will come up in our kids lives over and over, and for most kids have probably happened to at least one of their friends' families -- will have far greater impact. I don't think comments like that from MV Mom and Landels Teacher shows great role modeling. Unless you think being an anonymous name-caller is what children should aspire to.

Back to my original request -- Don, can you please declare an end to this? Nothing new can be said about the subject and it only fuels the hate.

Hi Martha,

Agreed. This comment thread is now locked. However I can't guarantee that some of the above people, who are obviously obsessed, won't leave more such comments elsewhere.
