I am in total agreement with driverX. This merge is a disaster waiting to happen.

I'm sorry David, I can't agree with you completely. I think that merge is a disaster that has happened several times already, and is just waiting for more.

I live near this exit, and I totally agree!

Many years ago I exited 280 to 85 north. At the dangerous spot cited, I had a flat on my left back wheel. My driver door opened up onto the right lane. Thankfully, a Highway patrolman soon pulled up behind me. He called AAA for me. He instructed me to sit in the passenger seat with the passenger door wide open. He directed me to move the rear view mirror so that I could see oncoming traffic. He said that if I saw that someone was going to plow into me, I should immediately run up to the top of the embankment. Then he left.
The AAA tow truck driver was brave. He changed the tire while he was out in the right lane of traffic. He replaced my tire, and I was on my way.
I'll always be thankful for those two highway heroes.

The traffic columnist for the SJ Merc reported last week that repaving this stretch of Hwy 85 is not scheduled to happen for 2 to 3 more years!
Here's a link to that column: Web Link

Possible news for you: this junction lies outside the Mountain View city limits.

Many years ago I decided that this stretch of highway 85 was dangerous. That right lane that is about to disappear, I one day discovered (WHEN I WAS NOT LOOKING)had a car that stopped in that lane. So there I was driving that curve and not looking ahead of me. I eventually looked in front of me and lo and behold there is this car stopped in the far right lane. So I quickly BORE LEFT and nearly hit this stopped car. Yes this stretch of 85 needs a re-working.

Driving North on 85 through the area is no picnic either. I refer to it as the Gauntlet and stick to the left lane. I'm shocked at how many of my fellow 85 drivers will speed-up and cut off the poor souls trying to enter from 280. Let's hope people become more compassionate.

Drive it everyday; it's not the best but I think the merge situation is just going to be around for awhile; I don't see a fix. The road condition is not good. Obama, send more money!
