Why not! After all, the city sold the old Mtn View HS site, pissed the money away, then came begging for us to vote for school bonds to fix the old Awalt and older Los Altos campus. Yep, your money is "good" hands with these folks!

After several failures, there's finally a very good, moderately successful restaurant in that spot - Bodrum. Why should the city buy the building now? I don't understand how messing with something good is "in line with the city's ongoing downtown redevelopment efforts." If it was the empty restaurant across California, I'd understand.

Why doesn't the city do something about 'Food Street' restaurant which has been derelict for years now. As far as I know it is still closed? Maybe knock down Ron's farmhouse while they are at it.

The crazy street alignment of California Street fronting the two properties has always bothered me. If the city does choose to buy both properties I hope they will realign the street, reducing the size of the properties.

As to whether the city should buy either or both properties, that depends on how successful the existing businesses are. I see no point in closing successful businesses just because the property might be cheap, and I see no reason why the city would benefit from being a landlord, especially if the businesses are not successful.

As to what the city could do with the properties, the time will come when it will be necessary to make a grade separated crossing with the railroad at Castro. (At that time, it would probably be a good idea to separate Central Expressway and Castro Street/Moffett Blvd also.) There is no simple way to do this, but having the two California Street properties would allow the city to consider a realignment of Castro over to Hope, either as a temporary arrangement during construction, e.g., a one-way loop on Hope to Villa to Castro and back to California, or as a permanent realignment, e.g., Hope could be the railroad grade separation over or under the transit center, with Castro dead-ending at the railroad tracks.

I don't see why the city considers buying the property, unless the existing business is failing. Need more information. It would be nice to have a cheap-eats option like a Der Weinerschnitzel, or maybe an Ihop back on Castro. I also would be pleased if there came a classic soda fountain type of place like The Creamery, where my grandma used to take me for a patty melt or BLT. What is it for??
