I also think it was wise for him to go off-duty. I don't want police to be distracted while on duty.

This is becoming a larger and larger problem. Twice now in the last couple years my vehicle has been attacked by this kind of thing, once from a Highway 101 overpass in San Mateo and once while driving on 19th St. in the City. I didn't bother to report either because I strongly doubt these people can be found and apprehended. I hope some preventative measures can be taken somehow, however.

Given the number of officer killings this past year, who can blame this officer for being startled? They must all be feeling like they are sitting targets right now.

Likelihood "these people can be found and apprehended" if reported: slim. Likelihood if not reported: none. I'll take slim over none, especially since the likelihood that said people will strike again is probable.

Will, wake up and REPORT these events. Too much effort....

"Just report it". Sounds so easy, yet in fact that's hardly the reality.

You're driving along the freeway and it happens on some overpass, you're not even sure which one because it doesn't happen until after you've passed it. And which one of the many peninsula cities was it that you're in at the moment? And then what's the number of its police department? And you're on your way to a meeting at work and can't be late.

So many problems and so much time to spend when the outcome is going to be "nothing done" anyway.

A central statewide website to report such crimes would be a nice feature for a start.

I would like to see all crimes in Mountain View posted on the web along with weekly, monthly, and yearly percentage totals of crimes solved which would us a picture of the extent of the problem and if the police are solving many of the crimes. Comparison with other cites of similar size would be interesting and maybe useful in developing a plan of action to decrease crime.

Chain-link barrier fences, as there are on several bike bridges I've seen over US Hwy 101, would go a long way to help prevent "large stone droppers" being able to do this (as it prevents them from doing so over US Hwy 101), as they'd have to heft a heavy chunk of concrete or stone over the barrier, and still try and hit their intended target. I think that under those circumstances, most vandals wouldn't bother. Heck, I'd be willing to kick in tax dollars for that.
