Possible homeless shelter site gets 'upzoned'

Original post made on Dec 16, 2009

Last week the City Council increased the allowed office density, and thus the value, on a piece of property the county is trying to sell at 590 East Middlefield Road, likely killing off hopes for a homeless shelter there in the process.

yes! this is great news, im sorry Jess Santana's plans didnt pan out so well. bringing a homeless shelter to a beautiful city like mountain view would be counter productive and a step backwards for all of us and our city. having such a BIG building dedicated to homeless would only draw more homeless to the area and where do you think these would congregate during the day? yes around the city! have you seen the filth and nastiness that homeless bring with them? i cant believe the responses of people in Jess Santana's thread suggesting that this was a good idea! this article makes my day and i hope puts Jess' ideas on how to help support people who put forth no effort to rest for ever!

Sean, you're a punk.

People are homeless for all sorts of reasons. Some are mentally incompetent and probably should be institutionalized. Some have chemical dependencies. A few are homeless willingly -- "put forth no effort," as you put it -- and they don't ask for anything from anybody except to be left alone so it all works out.

Many, especially lately, are just down on their luck and trying to bounce back. Santana is among this group.

Some people, apparently you among them, are philosophically offended by the idea that plain old luck can affect our lives so deeply - that somebody can do everything right and still hit the skids. They want to believe that everybody on earth DESERVES exactly what they get. This must be comforting to you, but it simply is not how the world works.

Whatever you believe, the point is that even if that building isn't the best place for a shelter, or even if you think there shouldn't be one in Mountain View, you don't have to be a jerk about it.

I hope Sean doesn't lose his job and then get sick and need very expensive medications. Any one of us could end up homeless. I count my blessings that I've been fortunate so far.

"Neither the council nor Kniss addressed the possibility of a homeless shelter on the site during last Tuesday's meeting."

Why? The need for a homeless shelter has never been greater. Are any council members reading this and want to answer?

PS to Sean - if you want the homeless people off the streets, let's give them a place to go, at least temporarily until they get help or get their lives back together.

damn you guys are silly-
"People are homeless for all sorts of reasons. Some are mentally incompetent and probably should be institutionalized"

ok

"Some have chemical dependencies."

ok

"and they don't ask for anything from anybody except to be left alone so it all works out."

...umm sound like mr santana is asking for a whole lot more then to be just "left alone", a 118 room building to house him and his buddies and put the bill on hard working taxpayer dollars? yeah...how about NO! why do these individuals get off so easy in life? maybe some have feel on hard times, who cares? i have had plenty of "hard times" and you dont see me petitioning to get a homeless shelter opened.

"Many, especially lately, are just down on their luck and trying to bounce back"

san antonio spurs didnt cover last night? i bought 3 scratchers and didnt get anything back....sounds like im down on my luck. maybe i should give up. wow, if the world worked on your logic no one would ever have to "DO" anything. let me guess, your at home....collecting un-employment.....in your pj's....yeah.

you can call me a jerk, most just call me a realist!

@patio bear, i hope i dont get sick and need very expensive meds either.i bet 90% of homeless just use this as an excuse. maybe 5% vets/and people who are REALLY sick need the help and this shelter will help maybe 1% of the 5% the other 99% you guessed it... just gave up and want a free meal!

You obviously know everything so there's little point in arguing, but...

* I didn't say Santana wanted to be on the streets and left alone, he was in another category and you misread my post. "ummm...."

* You bought three scratchers and san antonio spurs what??? This has something, anything whatsoever, to do with a discussion on homeless people? If this is the "logic" by which your world works, you are truly a hopeless case.

* I'm at work and work hard.

* "why do these individuals get off so easy in life?" You old joker - too funny.

Often wrong, never in doubt - that's you. I would never in a million years call you a realist. Quite the opposite.

Seriously lmao. thanks for that.
"Often wrong, never in doubt - that's you." sounds resonable ...never been told that but wouldnt doubt it. i ask myself then- why do so many people come to ME for advice? makes me think. opinions are like a55holes everyone has one, i think mine just matters alot cause most of the time its from an angle that squares dont think of.

weather i agree of disagree has no bearing on weather or not a homeless shelter is built- so who really cares? just my opinion. im 29 year old 50 hour day worker who has raised his family in MV and i would hate to see this city succomb to things. thats it.
anyway good luck and i respect your views you should take the higher road and do the same

From my experience being a landlord, I know that good tenants would move out when bad tenant move in the same neigborhood. For people who had little experience dealing with homeless, they find it quite frightening when they were approached by homeless people. No parents feel comfortable letting their kids walking on the street filled with homeless. When local resident feel that the area is not safe, they will move to another safe neighborhood.

Homeless people are not bad people, but they normally look very different. Their behavior is a bit strange (under the influence of you know what). Most of them choose to be homeless for verious reasons. It's the freedom of their choice. We should respect that their desire to live on the street.

East Palo Alto is a better place for homeless. With the same amount of money, the city can buy a building a few times bigger than the "Middlefield One".

For people who would like to gain political advancement, building homeless shelter on the expense of Mountain View residence (or homeowners) is unethical.

For those of the responsible individuals on the verge of becoming homeless, you should get direct help for job and shelter from the limited MV resource. The shelter should not be built as anybody's second home.

The tax payer money is better spent on responsible individaul or families who are struggle finacially (--on the verge of becoming homeless), is better spent on helpping our local education system that can keep our kids from becoming homeless one day, is better spent on keeping local public workers employed......

Why are we wasting very limited resource on a project that can provide Zero benifit to all the mountain view homeowners and little benifit to most of the renters. Yes, people still need to give. A check to the "Food Bank" will alway help giving homeless an instant satisfaction.

xyz,

Yeah, send them to East Palo Alto with the HSR. Classic. Anything the wealthy peninsula cities don't want, just put it in EPA. Their city is already messed up, so what's a few more things huh?

I side with Sean, send them to EPA I sure as hell don't want them trashing up my town.

im not saying to move it to epa in particular, but to city like epa.. a city that HAS A HOMELESS PROBLEM!!!!!! thats what so many of you are missing. mountain view does not have a problem. housing 118 homeless individuals would most likely create one..it doesnt take a genious..cmon. most here who post are not the sharpest knife in the drawer.....

Sean, what happened to respecting others' views? You ought to learn basic grammar and spelling before insulting everyone's intelligence who doesn't agree with you.

As for your specific arguments, a former police chief did a nice job taking them apart here: Web Link For some reason, I find him to be a lot more credible and knowledgeable.

Why DO so many people come to you for advice? The mystery deepens.

"close readeer" i will have to agree with you that my spelling and grammer are bad, i have google to thank for my spelling errors (actually use to be decent at spelling), and not paying attention in english class is to thank for my grammer and punctuation mistakes. sorry your so critical, i hope your daily routines and life are not like this as i am sure your a joy to be around.

i respect others views and i feel honored some dude would mention me by name 3 times in his article. i know why this is though, because i am right! im not going to argue with you people on the voice, i found this website to be very helpfull and interesting to me as i can see what is going on in the city i reside and comment as i feel appropriate. the homeless shelter issue is ridiculous and i am glad it has been scrapped, or damn near scrapped. call me what you want and write what makes you feel good as i am sure your a clueless old person.

peace

Sure, peace bro. You're right, and I'm whatever, and bla bla. I get it. The one thing you've said all along that's actually right is that I shouldn't give a damn what you think.

Just, next time you go spouting on some web site, calling people you don't know lazy mooches or whatever, just try to keep in mind that you're talking about other people's friends and family. And they know the actual truth.

Good luck to you.
