Council approves new office building on Evelyn

Original post made on Nov 19, 2009

The days are numbered for Pacific Euro Hotel after the City Council unanimously approved an office building to go where it sits on Evelyn Avenue, just west of Castro Street and a stone's throw from the train station.

I think it's great that they are getting rid of that sorry excuse for a hotel but three times higher than nearby buildings? Also....

- The City is letting the developer "voluntarily do whatever is deemed possible for plants around the building"? Developers never volunteer to do anything that is not going to put money in their pocket.

- Jac Siegel is not a fan of the building's modern design.

- council members complained that the developer did not illustrate what the building would look like from the Castro Street area.

- Ronit Bryant was not so impressed, saying she had concerns with how the building would affect the "pedestrian experience" downtown.

But it passed unanimously, so does the City have any say at all in the end result? Sounds like they are giving this developer carte blanche, or maybe there is more to this story?

Nice to see the councilors pandering about having nice environment on Evelyn. Have they ever actually been there?

Perhaps they might have noticed the decrepit parking strip on Evelyn along the train line with roots sticking through and the Caltrain dumping ground for unwanted construction material facing it. How about actually caring about tidying up the area instead shaking down captive developers? Too much work? Mountain View deserves better.

I just hope it does not sit vacant like so many small to medium sized office space currently for rent throughout the city.

Why don’t we have a honest City/County Council that will honestly say “Developer (Contractors) Lobbyists , Developer (Contractors), “donate to us and we will approve”!!!!”

It would be great if the City Council and all the other “Councils” and “Work Shops” learned a new word – NO or new phase – DISAPPROVED….

There is no sane reason for this except MONEY, MONEY, MONEY and not caring about the people of Mountain View or ANY of the other communities …..

Sound to me like DEVELOPMENT, DEVELOPMENT, DEVELOPMENT!!!! Gee, the CITY has messed up so much without looking back and LEARNING from the past..
