Proposal to replace Pacific Euro Hotel

Original post made on Oct 30, 2009

A small hotel on Evelyn Avenue near Castro Street, which some neighbors say is "essentially a halfway house," would be demolished to make way for a four-story office building under a proposal heard this week by the city's zoning administrator.

To call that place a "Hotel" is laughable. That place has mostly permanent residents.

"During the meeting, some complained about the Pacific Euro Hotel near their condos at 108 Bryant Street, saying it detracted from the quality of their neighborhood."

The way the game is played is to buy a house or condo and then move aggressively to increase the market value of your purchase. You do this by working though the political process to increase the market of your existing immediate surroundings and tap the city treasury for as much as possible.

It's a good thing that the story as written related this process plainly. I've seen such stories before that tried to put it in some righteous fashion as though moral necessity demanded that the political process represent people who wanted to profit from their recent home purchases or speculations in particular by running out lower income people who might be present but weren't there to mow the grass.

Over time this particular housing is likely an uneconomic use of the land given the proximity to the transit station and increasing density of uses in the area. The surplus of office space in the Valley from our larger economic problems is likely the reason it's still there now. That is, normal economics can govern this land use, not the desire of a few yupsters to enlist the Mountain View government's political process in the cause of their real estate speculation.
