Original post made on Oct 20, 2009

NASA has confirmed that a driver moving at high speed plowed through Moffett Field's main gate last Friday night, nearly killing a security guard before pushing a truck off the road, which in turn destroyed NASA's new electronic sign.

I want to commend NASA Security Officials for how they handled the incident. Lets hope those security officers recover from their injuries quickly and return to the posts.

I think the Mountain View Voice should check their sources as most of this articles in not factual.

This story has been updated a few times, as new information comes to light. Unfortunately, NASA is not revealing much about what happened, so we're forced to fall back on anonymous sources, which can be less reliable.

"Nearly Killed" REALLY? That's a pretty big jump to a conclusion in a headline.
How about "Escaped serious injury"
"Nearly Killed" is a very exaggerated headline that is speculative at best. Journalism 101 MV Voice. Don't try to invent drama to make your story sound more interesting.

OMG, I was nearly killed when I stumbled on the sidewalk today!!!

One guard dove out of the way of an oncoming vehicle reportedly coming at him at more than 60 miles per hour. The second guard was behind the wheel of the truck that was totaled -- he was knocked unconscious in the collision. "Nearly killed" is perfectly accurate.

Since they didn't even "sustain life-threatening injuries", it would be difficult to argue they were "nearly killed". "Escaped serious injury" is more appropriate.

Addtionally, it's a news source's job to only report reliable information. We already have web forums for spreading rumors.

I heard a rumor there are some armchair quarterbacks working at NASA Ames.

Ah, Mr. Frances, now you see why it is known as "Never A Straight Answer."

I doubt that a person hit directly by a vehicle traveling at 60 miles an hour would survive. It sounds like the difference between getting hit and not, was a few feet, in which case "nearly killed" is quite reasonable.

Again a semantics argument? I am sick of the impossibly high standards some readers set for this local newspaper. I know we have an highly educated pop. here, but put a lid on the arrogance of it all!

I don't live in Mountain view, I am a published writer and my college is forwarding this article over the internet as an example of sloppy journalism.

When using anonymous sources, better to state that right up front in the article. I have a degree in journalism. I learned this in school.

Young reporters start at these community papers. When they stop making these types of errors under deadline pressure, they are finally ready to step up to a better job!
