EDITORIAL: Energetic Stasek got things done

Original post made on Oct 8, 2009

Even though her life was cruelly cut short on Sept. 24, former City Council member Rosemary Stasek accomplished more during her few years in Mountain View and Kabul, Afghanistan than most of us do in a lifetime.

I shall miss Rosemary... She planned to return to Mountain View to visit with all her friends. I was so looking forward to chating with her. She set the bar very high for volunteerism... Mountain View and the world was a better place for having her for her short life.

Rosie will be missed by those of us who have had the privilege and pleasure to work and play with her over the years. While many of us whined about the stated of the world, she went out and did something about it. Her seeds of change planted in Kabul will grow over time - and her work there has inspired even my son who is in the Army now, helping Afghan farmers to safely grow crops without being attacked by the Taliban drug lords. What I will always remember about Rosie is that she was graceful under pressure. In IT projects that we worked together, she would always have a smile and the ability to keep the customer and her co-workers calm and assured that it would all come together fine. And then she would make the time after a hard day to go do her altruistic ventures - that was the more important part of her life. And we could disagree wildly on political issues and still go have an enjoyable lunch. Like after sneakily replacing her Al Gore Windows background with a Ross Perot picture one morning at work and laughing at her scream upon waking her PC. We loved her and will always carry her memory in our hearts, her smile in our eyes and her diligence to serve others in our hands and feet. That was a life well done Rosie, we miss you already.

While I'm a staunch conservative, I highly respect the selfless courage of this woman to put herself in the middle of a combat zone and risk personal safety to help people in need.
