What is that clearing up in the mountains?

Original post made by Gazer, Cuesta Park, on Oct 2, 2009

As I was sitting at the red light at the intersection of 237 and El Camino, I looked up at the Santa Cruz mountains and noticed a large area with no trees. Where is this place? I am hoping it is a park because it looks like a great spot for a picnic with a view. (ps - tried to locate it on Google Earth but couldn't pinpoint it).

Probably the Steven's Creek Quarry?

I'm glad to know your mind's on driving your car.

Oh a sarcastic answer, what a surprise. Yawn... No wonder you need 100% of your brain power to sit at a red light. I guess being able to process a color change from red to green just comes easier to some people than others.

You'd be surprised how many accidents occur when driver's are distracted for even a split second.

it's probably part of Rancho San Antonio, if you go on google maps, look up the intersection and trace a straight line in that direction to the southwest you will see the park there.

Thanks Jon - I will check that out. I don't think it is the quarry because it is a little to the West of there.

CHP - no worries, the red light hangs right in front of that view so you see it while looking at the light. Please get after those cell phone users and texters. They are a menace! Saw one swerving on Foothill Xwy today, and I definitely am not looking around at the scenery then. Would be nice to enjoy driving because the roads are very pretty around here, but you have to be so cautious with all these law breakers around you.

Gazer, I don't see how you are going to win this one. A split-second of whimsical gazing while driving could be all that it takes, even though the odds are admittedly slim, that's hardly the point.

I think that grassy open area on the hilltop may be Windy Hill Open Space Preserve, part of the MidPeninsula Regional Open Space District.Web Link

Thanks Old Timer - I think you got it! I think I'll BIKE there sometime.

(Did I not mention that I saw that field while sitting (aka waiting) at a red light?) I say we call out a ban on all billboards. Imagine all the wrecks those things cause.

G'day mates

The light colored spot that you see is one of the grassy clearings in Monte Bello Open Space Preserve. As the light turns green look for other green spots in the mountain near those clearings - They are the pot farms.

There are some real perfect people on these boards who never do anything at a red light but look straight ahead and of course side to side in case they are going to get broadsided! What is wrong with you people? A person asks a perfectly good question like what is that clearing in the hill, which one can see by staring straight ahead at the red light, and you morons criticize them? Get a life!

What you may be viewing is the top of the canyon where Permanente Creek originates. The cement company operator has been piling "dirt" or quarry spoils there, and it has become noticeable, little by little, for the past five years.

Yup, Marilyn is correct, if you're spotting what I think you are. Check out this related web site:

What's up with the flaming of the original poster? It's a valid question. I wondered about the "scar" I see driving home on 237, explained by the most recent posters and thank them for their help.

Great to see everyone paying attention to driving. Now I know why accidents happen.

Thank you Marilyn and blkngland. Excellent web link about the "scar" and a photo of the exact spot that I noticed. Too bad it is the result of the quarry and damage. From the ground it looks like a "Sound of Music" meadow. Thanks to all who supported my question. Next time I will start with "While I was walking, I noticed..."

The clearing you see is Palo Alto cutting down more trees. Apparently, they feel the need to cut down more trees since they have already cut a lot down in their own town.
