Ad hoc BMX park bulldozed by city

Original post made on Aug 27, 2009

In the name of safety and to protect itself from lawsuits, the city took a bulldozer last week to the result of years of work by local youths: The informal BMX park known as "Creek Trails," located in plain sight of the Stevens Creek Trail at Central Avenue.

Unbelievable. I use to ride there as a kid 35 years ago when BMX was just getting started. The jumps I have watched the young folk build out there recently were well-made and cleverly designed.

Sad, sad move, city council. Wake up. You can get just as injured riding so-called "certified" jumps as you can on the kid-made ones. It's only your own butts you are trying to protect, not the kid's.

Hard to believe you flattened it just like the world-famous Calabazas site was ruined. You never hear of that now boring site anymore in the BMX world, except in sad tales of how cool it ONCE was.

City-built BMX track? Yeah, right. Will it be a laughingstock just like the promised quality skateboard park the kids were suppose to get, the one which de-evolved into a plain slab of pavement with whimpy wooden ramps instead of proper concrete bowls.

... or the promised off-leash dog park, the one that was suppose to be somewhere near downtown and have berms, cool green grass and shade trees for your comfort and pleasure, like those of so many other cities, but instead was reduced to a flat, dirty sand-lot with a few benches, shoved way to the edge of the stinkin' algae-bloomed bay and sloughs where it is too far to walk your dog to from any residence within city borders.

(Oh, we did eventually get the grass, berms and trees, but set on the OUTSIDE of the park fences to hide it's ugliness, instead of on the inside where the freakin' animals and owners could ENJOY them.)

Hello? Ever try to play fetch-the-ball with your pet there? Dirt lots plus dog saliva = MUD guys. Just another joke for the people of Mtn. View to be embarrassed by (sigh*)

Hi,

That's really ridiculous to shut the park down with a bulldozer. So, some admin guy sitting in his ivory tower deems it an opportune time to demolish a well carved out BMX park? That's akin to using forceful violence to get your way - a 'fantastic' example to use on the youths don't you think?

I feel for those kids. Yes, adults see the "dangers" posed but do they also see the benefits and skills demonstrated at these parks? It's something that should be encouraged.

So, you say it is dangerous and you fear the lawsuits. So, Mr. politician, build a park and get supervision. Where's your entrepreneural spirit? Nothing worng in getting these guys some where safe to go and get some employment to boot don't you think?

Oh, yes, how did you guess? I was once on these things called BMXs some 38 years ago right when it started - I'm still wishing I can ride them again!

I used to ride there 20 years ago on my way home from work. I was in my mid 20's and just getting started in the High Tech industry. Have not been back there in years.

I remember being impressed by how well behaved the "kids" were.
