I first read about this on a Fire Fighter News Website and then I came here to the local paper to see if there were any more details. I have to ask. Is this something the Police Department ready needs to release to the media. I understand that the officers involved didn't think the lighter was an issue when they placed them in the backseat of the patrol vehicle but now with this article, the article in the San Jose Mercury News and a host of other websites, now the officers look foolish. First a patrol vehicle is stolen and now an officer lets his suspect attempt to light his or her car on fire. I don't know what spokesperson Liz Wylie's media background is but someone needs to censor her press releases or teach her a little bit more about how the media works. Of course this is the type of story the media wants and it is just the type of day where when the media calls asking what's up you say, "Really nothing going on in Mountain View today." I am not sure this is the voice I want communicating what my local police department is doing. It only takes a slip of the tongue or releasing a little too much to mess up an employees reputation or worst screw up an investigation.
Save the press release for the big stories. Example: "We solved a fifteen year old murder. Want to hear about that?"
