I dont know of a bakery in Mountain view that I like for cakes. I usually go to a grocery store in palo alto or los altos. It would be nice to have a small bakery downtown that could do a good business.

Passage Bakery in Mtn. View has GREAT cakes! They are pricey, but are rich in flavor so you don't need to eat too much! The bakery has a vegetarian restaurant next door and another restaurant on El Camino by Clark St. and Rengstorf. The Bakery is on El Camino, a block before Shoreline if you are traveling north.

We use Copenhagen in Burlingame ... It is WELL worth the drive! Heaven in a single bite!

Sugar Butter Flour in Cherry Chase shopping Center, Sunnyvale on the border of Mtn. View makes amazing cakes. The owner used to be the pastry chef for upscale Manresa restaurant in Los Gatos, need I say more? They also have mini desserts and little chocolates, as well as great lunches.

Hong Kong bakery is good. I don't think Wilson's in Santa Clara is
around any longer but it was always good. I will have to try

If you want a cake for a birthday, anniversary etc for a large crowd, Grain D'Or on El Camino (Walgreen's shopping Ctr) makes an awesome sheet cake with Whipped Cream frosting and a choice of fillings for around 90-100 bucks. Sugar Butter Flour and other high end bakeries charge by the serving, so if you have 70 people they want something like 300 bucks for a cake. Fine for a wedding but not so much for other events (like birthdays) The sheet cake at Grain D'Or is very good,very fresh and a great deal.

I'm amazed that no one has mentioned the Prolific Oven in downtown Palo Alto. A wide variety of cakes, and the chocolate chocolate cake is to die for. No sugary icing here; it's quality all the way. We get all our birthday cakes there nowadays. (And they'll personalize them with iced lettering for free.)

I don't eat cake, but I sure see many people buy sheet cake and Just Dessert cakes at Costco.
