McDonald's charging too much?

Original post made by chuck mckellar, Shoreline West, on Jul 14, 2009

At the McDonald's yesterday morning (El Camino & El Monte Rd) I ordered a #7 which, on the menu, was listed at "$4.19 plus tax". Upon receiving the receipt, they had charged me $4.29 plus tax. Apparently, they upgraded my coffee to a medium but did so without informing me. Also, nowhere on the menu does it indicate the automatic upgrade. This also happened a few weeks ago at the same site. I can't imagine this being legal. It's only a dime, but nonetheless it's business practice that really isn't ethical.

Anyone else experience the same?

I get a combo at Carl's Jr. (sandwich, fries, and drink) and they always try to upsize my order. I have to tell them "I want the size that comes for the price on the sign." which generally means small fries and drink. That's what I want, and with free refills on the soda, there is no point in getting a larger cup (the "Small" cup is 21 oz. which is plenty when refilled).

Let's hope it discourages you and everyone else for eating the toxic crap they serve there. Didn't you see the documentary Supersize Me? You're certainly not doing your health any favors.

Well everything in moderation.... Yes, I've had the same thing happen at the drive through at McDonalds on Rengstorf near Costco. They would give me a medium OJ thus making the price higher than stated on the menu board. I had to specifically order the SMALL orange juice. So it seems to be a common practice but it's just not right for them to charge you for the larger size w/o asking.

Burger King on El Camino/Grant Road is doing the same thing. All the breakfast item shows the "value" drink price, but if you don't tell them, they assume you want the "small" drink, which is more expensive than listed.

Wow, I could fill a newspaper with stories about all the businesses that have pulled the price switcheroo on me at the register. Usually, I just march right back to the store, point out their mistake and receive the apology and refund. I suggest you do the same. I think when the economy was strong, many consumers let these errors slide. Back then, time was money and not to be wasted disputing petty charge errors. So the businesses either got careless, or just tried to skim a little extra here and there.

USA is a registered user.

Bernie -- No I did not see that "documentary".

As a non-liberal, I am able to make my own decisions without help from the Federal government. For example, I can decide to have a burger or have a salad or eat somewhere else.

Also as a non-liberal, I can see the connection between my actions and the consequences. If I make bad decisions, I do not blame corporations, the government, or anyone else who conveniently has deep pockets.

.10 may not seem like much but i have to believe that McDonalds sells at least 1000 combos a day 1000 x .10 = $100. im sure the owner is WELL AWARE of what is going on. did you see in the paper a couple weeks ago that owners of burger king are mad cause the whopper jr or what ever it is they sell for .99 actually cost them 1.10? the mark up and profit is getting smaller for these fast food joints. also i can summerize supersize me for you in a couple sentences. guy eats nothing but mcdonalds for 30 days breakfast lunch dinner and every time they ask if he wants super size he has to do it. after 2-3 weeks he becomes physically ill and ends up in the hospital. i agree though everything in moderation!
