Grim school-funding outlook will get grimmer

Grim and grimmer: That's the outlook for California public school funding at least until 2012, state Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, told a room packed with school superintendents and elected school trustees Saturday.

I would appreciate it if the local school districts would suggest a "voluntary self-tax" based on income so that those of us who are willing to support local schools with donations as well as tax payments could have some idea of what our fair share would need to be to preserve the current level of funding. For example, something like:

California taxable income $50,000 - $74,999, voluntary self-tax = .5% of taxable income
California taxable income $75,000 - $99,999, voluntary self-tax = .7% of taxable income
Etc.
