Gay youth protest Prop 8 ruling

Original post made on May 31, 2009

Hours after the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8, the statewide ban on same-sex marriage, a dozen local gay youth and their advocates gathered on one of Mountain View's busiest street corners, protesting, they said, for "the right to dream of someday getting married."

A marriage license is a privilege that comes with responsibility, it not a right (just like a driver's license). Proposition 8 was passed in law by a majority of the people, that is democracy. Democracy is what made America the best society in history. Scientist have determines that there is no genetic basis for homosexuality, there is not "gay gene". That means that homosexuality is a personal choice. If you choose a non-mainstream lifestyle, you must deal with the consequences.

Being gay seems to be the cool thing these days -- or maybe it is just a Bay Area thing. I have never had a problem with someone being gay (though I am not), however I still fail to understand why the "married" label is so important.

I would love to have three to five wives...and I would have married a long time ago if this was legal. But I am only allowed one woman under the law. Should we change that too? Can we stand on a corner and protest for this?

If a love between a women and a man is recognized by the states, then a love between two females or two males should also be recognized. What happened to equal rights? Your argument with polygamy is laughable. Its like saying, if sex is legal, then sex with an underage minor should be too. See how SMALL your argument is?

And mainstream life style?! WOW So if someone's religious values or even personal values is not mainstream in their community then it should take the consequences of small minded individual. America is a place of diversity and equality. Not only so, it is also a place of scientific discovery. Scientist's hypothesis on the gay gene is on the verge of being confirmed. Kids, stay in school.. you have so much more learn.

Marriage is not about love. Marriage is about responsibility. I may love my pet gerbil, but marriage is not an option. As far as equal rights, a gay man is free to marry any woman he wants, within the law (they must be of legal age, not family members, etc.).Sex with an underage minor should never be legal, nor has any mentally healthy person ever implied that it should be legal. Sex, like marriage, is only legal within limits of the law. Marriage between two men or between two women serves no benefit whatsoever to society. Polygamy and incest do not benefit society either and that is one of many reasons that these practices are illegal.

The small minded person, in this instance, is the person who persues an alternative lifestyle and automatically demands that everybody else in the community must be forced to accept the unusual lifestyle and even promote it. America was never a place of diversity, it was a place of unity, hence, the United States of America, not the Divided States. Again, with equality, a lesbian can marry any man she wants withing the rules of law. The idea of the discovery of a gay gene was started many years ago, but the more that this idea is investigated, the less evidence of a gay gene is discovered. Homosexuality is a psychological disorder, not a lifestyle. With proper scientific research and community help, homosexuality and other deviancies can be cured.

One of the most disconcerting issues I see in this Mountain View Voice article...is that the "youth" were being used to promote an adult life-style issue.

This is one reason I am against gay marriage. The gay community wants to teach young children that this is good to be gay. Recent news (Alameda Elementary Curriculum: gay penguin books) demonstrates that there is no limit to where the gay community will draw the line on teaching its lifestyle.

I do not want my young children even talking about getting married -- let alone the coolness of gay marriage.

*********
CHAC should be ashamed of itself for helping to put under-aged youth on the street to protest an adult issue.

Oh good lord, of course the animal analogies have to come out. Do you not understand the difference between an animal and a consenting adult?

BTW, this straight, married mama bought her kids "And Tango Makes Three" (the "gay penguin book"). So apparently it isn't only gays "pushing the gay agenda".

Gay marriage does not effect anyone besides the two gay people who love each other. Why do people care about controlling other people's lives so much? Let them get married.

I must say something here; the word "marriage" is about a lot more than just a label. Domestic partners do not have even half of the rights that "married" people have. A domestic partner cannot adopt their partner's child as easily; domestic partner does not have hospital visitation rights, a domestic partner has limited financial rights as well. There is an ENORMOUS difference between being "married" and in being "domestic partners". ..Again, why try to control other people's lives? If two people want to get married, then just let them.

Financially, for the community:
When gays were allowed to get married, there was a documented $100million surplus in direct conjunction to the gay marriages. --Speaking of, Prop 8 was THE FIRST time in US history when an American citizen's rights were taken away. THAT is shameful.

Two consenting adults who pay taxes and contribute to our society equally, should be allowed equal treatment. Besides, "traditional marriage" and "sanctity of marriage"are phrases being thrown around with little intellect backing them. To abide by traditional marriage, and upholding the sanctity of marriage would mean that people COULD NEVER GET DIVORCED. The marriage vows say, "Till death due us part." If you have ever supported someone who has been divorced, then you are acting hypocritically if you say that you want to uphold traditional marriage.

Gay marriage rights being taken away has nothing to do with religion at all! It has to do with civil legality. Our government is not debating what should be preached in churches-- neither are the gay people either. They just want to get married and live their own lives. They are not trying to take any rights away from anyone else. Just leave them alone. It makes e sick to see the lack of compassion in our world today.

I am ashamed of my neighbor who posted such a hurtful comment. There are so many gay people who are good and kind and pay their taxes like everybody else. The LGBT community is not trying to push anything onto anyone at all! They are not hurting anyone. They just want the ability to marry the person they are building their lives with -- THAT is RESPONSIBLE.

I am incredibly PROUD of CHAC. This is certainly not an issue only for adults. It is an issue for anyone who is LGBT, that includes our youth. My nephew (and a couple of our neighbors as well) are gay. I can sincerely say that being gay is NOT something that has been taught to them. They all grew up in heterosexual households. Also, they have all had such a difficult life because of community members suppressing them and judging them and taking their rights away. At one point, it was legal for same-gener couples to be married.

Do you know how many people would not have gotten married if it wasn't for gay people?

So many gays are hair dressers, make up artists, dress designers, florists, photographers, caterers and even ministers. Let the gay people have the right to marry be given back to them!

Anyone who is against this disgusts me. Let these two people love each other freely, and have all of the rights that they deserve. What does it bother anyone else for anyway?? I assure you that people who are so homophobic are either gay themselves, or, simply do not know and love anyone who is gay. Otherwise, you would see that they are kind loving people who deserve all the happiness in the world.

To all the gay people in Mountain View, and the surrounding areas. --Don't worry, most of Mountain View is full of people who are good hearted individuals and families, who think that you should be allowed to get married.

One or two A-holes who like to suppress others, do not speak for the majority.

The majority of Mountain View residents are really good people who do not judge others so harshly. We love and embrace our gay neighbors here!!! :-)
