Propositions offer terrible choices

Original post made on May 18, 2009

California's budget stalemate and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression culminate in the May 19 special election, when voters will be asked to approve legislation that would never survive in better times.

After reading the Voice's editorial on the special election, I watched the League of Women Voter's guide to the propositions on Channel 15. All I can say is "wow, we spend almost 50% of the State's general fund on education?" Look at the product we're getting! Since teacher's are not paid that much, where is all the money going?

PS The Voice erred in reporting on Prop 1A. The tax increase on income is across the board--not the top tax brackets. Either the Voice or the LWV is wrong on that point.

"1C makes changes to improve performance of the state lottery and to increase payouts and proceeds."

I know I'm late to the party on this one, but I really don't like this measure. If it were just a bond or just a measure that severed the lottery's connection to education, it would probably be bad enough. But it's much worse than that. "Improv[ing] performance of the state lottery" really means trying to get people to gamble more. It's far too 1984 for my tastes.

Get your facts right, this is not the worse economy since the depression. Well, not yet anyways, but Obama's working hard at it.

Or, more accurately, President Obama is working to make the corrections -- painful as they may be -- made necessary by the failed Bush administration.
