TONIGHT: Board mulls huge cuts to Adult School

Original post made on Apr 27, 2009

A big turnout is expected for the high school district's board meeting tonight, when trustees will discuss how to cut $1.3 million from the Adult School's budget -- an amount administrators say may require them to reduce funding to some programs by nearly half.

Could the Voice please provide more information about why these cuts are being made to Adult Education? I am guessing other departments or programs are being cut also? Is there something in the funding formula that specifies cuts to Adult Ed? Seems like cuts to Adult Ed is all I've heard about, just wondering about the rest of the district?

I have no reason to question the integrity of the MVLA district but am wondering what if any cuts are being made at the district office? I am guessing expenses like conferences, subscriptions, professional assn memberships, etc went out the window long ago? There's a phrase about making cuts "as far from the classroom as possible" and it would be reassuring to me as a MV resident, taxpayer, and district parent to know that those cuts (whatever they are!) have already been made.

I rather like MV City Manager Kevin Duggan's leading by example in saying he would forego his annual cost-of-living pay increase.

That's a good question. Although the Adult School is part of the Mountain View-Los Altos High School District, it receives money from a different source. The high schools are funded mostly through local property taxes, while the state provides funding for the Adult School.

The $1.3 million cuts were made specifically to adult education, and the district also has reductions around $700,000.
