Why is the city spending money on an event like this during tough times according to the city manager. Doesn't the police department have better places to spend their money on....Hasen't the word gotten out....GO support the local economy, go to Office Max or Office Depot and BUY YOUR OWN SHREDDER...

This was a great event last year. Not only did I get rid of a box of old documents, but it gave me an opportunity to talk directly to our MV police about issues in our community that concerned me.

Why do people always wait to find a police officer to speak about problems in their neighborhood? If there is a problem and you see someone or something that is wrong call the police then. Don't wait for it to be a good time for you. The police can not do anything after the crime has occurred and report a day, week, or months later. The cops may be busy but their not that busy.

Steve - It's not like I saw a murder and waited three months to talk to a police officer when it was convenient for me. I meant that it is an opportunity to have a discussion to a police officers at a community event.

Why do we relegate our city employees willing to expound on recycling and crime prevention to a church parking lot? Why aren't these employees on the Center for the Performing Arts stage or at least YouTube? My chai latte-sipping liberal conscience is injured when I think what a poor forum we provide these city employees willing to discuss recycling and crime prevention. Can't they at least get a web page?

It is just a waste of time and money. If they really want to do this then they should make this a city wide waste day like Santa Clara does....clean the city up

Its official-- there is someone on these boards that will complain about absolutely ANYTHING-- no matter how benign, how low-cost. I suppose that the MVPD should skip a simple half-day, negligable cost community outreach event to go chase down illegal aliens spitting on the sidewalks. Guess the police booth at Art and Wine is a crime against humanity, too.

They probley need the police both downtown at the Art & Wine fest to deal with the transients that hangout and bother the true wine loves that attend the event. But really...there is a lot of people that attend that one. Makes more sense then to just sit in a parking lot hoping for a turnout of more than fifty people to drop off their documents because they don't have a shredder. It's sad if someone hasn't figured out about identity theft and need an event like this instead of taking action for themselves. But If a few show up to shred their documents then maybe that is a little less work for cops in the future....just a though.

the Art and Wine Festival attracts neither 'transients' nor 'true wine lovers' (its a nice event and all, but its not a high-end kinda thing), and a few cops providing a small service to residents is dirt-cheap positive PR.

USA is right. I am not sure which Art & Wine Festival you were out but I've seen our local transients that hang out near San Antonio shopping center at the downtown events every time. So the police are needed down there. Oh and I am a wine lover and attend the event but I have to admit, I rather attend the Los Altos or the wine country events more. How did the topic shift from those to cheep to by a shredder to wine. Too funny.

Can't we just be grateful for this help? I have a shredder and shred the junk mail that I don't seem to be able to stop--despite all my efforts. However, shredding check books that have an incorrect address, etc. is too much for my shredder. Thank you, City of Mountain View and please ignore the naysayers.

For those of you who think this event is a waste of police time & your tax dollars...
Not everyone can afford to spend $45~85 on a good quality shredder! I think the Police Department deserves a pat on the back for doing their job by proactively protecting their citizens! Do you REALLY think that it's a better use of our limited tax dollars to help victims AFTER their identities have been stolen as opposed to trying to protect your neighbors before they become victims just because they couldn't afford a good shredder (strip shredders are not much of a deterrent against a patient thief!). As someone who knows several victims of identity theft, and the hours our officers spend at an event like this pales in comparision to the what is needed once someone becomes a victim!
Just because you don't see the invisible, it doesn't mean we don't exist; I'm expecting to be standing in line with a lot of others who can't afford a good quality shredder this Saturday!
Let me guess, next you'll object to your tax dollars being used to buy/maintain the computers in the library for the general public to use, by saying that everyone should just go out & support the local economy by buying a computer too!

I heard that Best Buy is having a sale on Shredders and laptops. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL ECONOMY and let the sales tax help the city. Take resposiblity for yourself. Shred, shred, shred and then put all that shred in the recycle bin. Or burn it on a cold night....but wait....make sure it is not a spare the air night.

Oh and then when you see the dumpster divers in your trash, call the police. They might be able to catch the ID theives in the act. Cool huh!

Sounds like some spoiled cry babies that have everything going for them and don't recognize the needs of some of the residents of this great city. These less fortunate residents might not have the extra cash you talk about. I feel the shredding day is a great PR situation for a city that has substantially prospered during the past 60 years and unfortunately, by doing so, has left some of its long-term residents economically behind. Also, I wonder how many of you negative citizens use the drop-off prescription drug disposal day that is also hosted by our Police Department. Should we do away with that program. Give us a break. We all live in the same city. Please let's not forget the older residents and those that can't afford the extra cost.
