She( Ms Mah) said she will "advocate on behalf of our schools in Sacramento."
Before she does that, I sure would want to know what the issues are. And I would sure like her to get our opinions on these issues.
From the experience that Palo Alto has had with Mah- and that is all we can go on, we saw her advocate for only about 2% of our student population over and over again, to the point where she got in the way of the board dealing with other important issues. Many members of that community had very different opinions on what she was presenting to the P.A. school board. I would like to know how often will she go to Sacramento? And who pays for these trips? Do her trips come out of the 285 million dollars that this board oversees?
I would be much more comfortable with the newly elected president of this board: Joe di Salvo going and advocating on our behalf.

I would love to see a breakdown of her win, numerically by city. I feel that there were a large number of Palo Alto voters who voted against her. She appears to be popular in Palo Alto by those involved in language immersion programs and the many other residents who feel that language immersion for the lucky few is not the way to teach language when the rest get nothing until 7th grade. Those who are more interested in equity in language education (and equity in education across the board) are not proMah.

I agree with you. But I think that we already know that many P.A. voters voted against her. And the other cities are not yet aware of her history and how her actions splintered our community. Many people who are for languages, even for immersion programs - were shocked that after MI was voted out, Mah threatened the board with her letter that stated that if they put in MI, she will not petition for a charter school. She has been on this county board for more than one year- we have heard nothing in all this time of what they do.Many of us know that she does not represent us.

Yes, I do agree with you. I think the only redeeming part of this particular Board now is that Joe di Salvo, the ousted former principal of JLS middle school, also got onto this Board. Although he is not our particular representative, I do trust him and think that perhaps with his influence we may stave off any influence Mrs. Mah has that would not be agreeable to this county and hopefully our district.

I have heard very good remarks about Joe di Salvo and so I agree with you that it is great that he will be on this board as president. Most people do not know what this board oversees. Many people have told me that it basically does nothing- visits schools, but has no power. And I have heard several people who do know this county board say that it needs much better people on it. So, with Joe di Salvo it will be a good start.

I think that unfortunately the part of Mountain View served by LASD knows all too well what this Board does:

it rubberstamps just about any petition set forth by charter schools (maybe by way of doing nothing :) ).

That is exactly what we were worried about with Mah regaining her seat.

I agree with you. Many of us are still worried. This board is not transparent. It does not televise its meetings. Mah told one reporter that you can order the tapes, but they take about 2 weeks to get and cost $10. Why is she going up to Sacramento? To get better known? And again who pays for her expenses? Us? Who does she represent when she goes there?

Well, Mah just voted for the Bullis Charter School extension into middle grades. According to the minutes, she didn't even bother to visit the affected Los Altos School District nor anybody in the community.... yet took the time to visit Bullis Chater School staff.

Mah's actions here do not surprise me. Of course, she should have visited administration from both the los Altos school district, and parents in the community and maybe the charter school teachers and admin- to be democratic about this situation. I wish that were her style! Especially since she is now on a board!
I am sure that in a few years she is going to advocate for Palo Alto to build a middle school for the Mandarin immersion program- even though P.A.'s schools are over enrolled, have no facility for it, and do not have the funds. That is, once her child is of middle school age.
And if refused, she can threaten a charter school, again.
