This article is very disappointing. The district is truly doing some great things, but needs improvement in other areas. There is a good conversation to be had on this topic. Why, then, even mention:
- a 2 point drop (.27%) for African American students--not only is this a fairly small population in the district (not to say they "dont matter" as a group, but stats for small groups simply dont tell you much of value, and this stat says nothing of the districts overall performance), but that "decline" in scores is statistically meaningless. Why is this ink-worthy?
- a 1 point drop at Bubb is merely listed as a school that "lost ground". Bubb has shown excellent API growth over the last several years, making a .12% dip perhaps inevitable and certainly unimportant. Castro has also seen noteworthy progress- again, a drop there doesnt mean 'mixed results' after some years of solid improvemtnt. I cant speak for Monte Loma, but their drop in score is also nominal.
Please focus on the good -and bad- work that these scores represent and avoid getting bogged down in numbers for numbers sake.
