Math scores up, English a struggle

Original post made on Aug 22, 2008

Local students increased their standardized test scores for the 2007-08 school year, according to results released last week, but administrators worry many minorities and low-income students are still failing to meet higher federal standards this year.

Why not merge Los Altos Elementary, Mtn View Whisman Elementary, and MVLA High School into a single unified entity serving 12,000 kids with a coherent curriculum, cohesive schedules, and cost savings? Oh wait; isn't that too much like Palo Alto Unified? Far too sensible; idea must be scuttled: empires would be dismantled; red ink would stop flowing; common sense might prevail. Can't have that from the education system now, can we.

Yes, let's create an even larger, unwieldy, centralized bureaucracy, Ned and Phil. Screw local control.

Palo Alto is one solid rich white-asian demographic. One size fits all there. Moutnain View and Los Altos have a wide variety from the rich white-asians to the poor Mexicans who are illiterate in their own language.

Looks at the test scores at Graham. What a mess.
More integraiton is not going to solve the problem.

To USA resident of old Mountain View neighborhood. You sound like white trash. I'd rather have a poor mexican in my neighborhood than the likes of you.

Using racism while pulling the race card. Smooth move. How is it working out for you?

Reread what I wrote. There is nothing anti-Mexican about it. What works for rich white-asians will not necessarily work for poor Mexicans and vice versa. Unlike Palo Alto, we actually have a real diversity of wealth and education levels and not that it matters, but yes, a diversity of skin color. It's diversity. Celebrate it.

We cannot just keep throwing taxpayer money at the situation without addressing the real socio-economic and cultural issues that are cuasing the huge gap in the community and the mess at Graham.

USA,

Is it just "poor Mexicans who are illiterate in their own language" or is it all Mexicans? Do you also hate Americans whose parents are Mexicans? What about other races that look like Mexicans? What if one parent is a poor Mexican and the other parent is a rich one?
