Subscription solicitors in MV

Original post made by Concerned Resident, North Whisman, on Jul 23, 2008

A young man came to my door in the evening and said he was from a group called "Opportunity to Advance" that was "sponsored by the SJ Mercury News." He showed me a badge around his neck and asked if I would "sign a petition" to help him earn a bond towards a college education.

He also said he was a high school student athlete and that he had lost his mother to cancer. I asked, "will it cost me anything to sign?" and he said, "just fifteen dollars."

What he was really doing was soliciting subscriptions for the Mercury News, but he wasn't being honest or up front about it.

If this group or similar ones come to your door, beware! They just want to sell you a newspaper subscription.
