We should keep asking ourselves why does HD want a store in MTN View?
E PA is 7 miles, Cupertino is 5 miles Santa Clara 6 miles and Sunnyvale is 2 miles from my house. (San Antonio would be 3.1)
Contractors who drive in from 50 miles away could care less.
The Big box wants to rid of the competetion like Mintons, Sunnyvale Lumber, Pine Cone, Bruce Bauer, the Lowes that just moved into Sunnyvale and the three Orchard Supply HW near by, yes one in Mtn View.
Since we are so limited in retail space I am happy Mtn View controls what move into the area. We dont need a Coffee shop at every cornner or a Hardware store.
Where can we buy a shirt? Sears is moving, Emporium is a medical center, Mayfield Mall is a condo.
Look at our neighbors
Sunnyvale tore down the whole mall.
And Vallco upgraded the center.
We got a Wallmart

Council made the right call on this one. Even Tom Means realized he made a mistake by being the lone vote supporting a HD.
HD would be a total waste of that prime real estate. We need a walkable shopping center with stores that Mountain View needs. We don't need a warehouse for home improvement contractors. As the mortgage meltdown continues, I bet HD will start closing stores. Fewer people will be able to use their home equity as an ATM for new granite countertops, etc.
By the way, the new DAISO Japanese $1.50 Store at the Center is great. That place is awesome. (I do miss the Hobby Shop, however)
Also, Los Altos School District still needs space for a new elementary school in the north end. The Sears site isn't ideal, but it is big enough. I'd support building a school with playing fields there.

Are you kidding me? i can hardly believe my eyes. everyone opposing home depot in mountain view in the first place are a bunch of idiots. You would think that we would want anything store wise that would generate that number of jobs for our city. so instead we have had a bunch of outdated, barely hanging on buisness's, i am simply shocked we are snobie you aren't good enough bunch aren't we? dispicable, people come on.
