Castro Street Research

Original post made by Joe Kott, another community, on Nov 9, 2007

Dear Town Square Readers,

I am conducting research for a doctoral dissertation on the topic of urban street design and the use of streets through the Institute for Sustainability and Technology Policy at Murdoch University (Web Link Perth, Western Australia under the supervision of Professor Jeff Kenworthy. My study includes evaluation and comparison of five to six block segments on each of six Bay Area streets, including Castro Street in Mountain View. The section of Castro Street in my study is from W. Evelyn (near Caltrain) to Church in downtown Mountain View

I have collected considerable field data, but will also be collecting information from those who use Castro St. on a daily basis. I have drafted a Castro Street Users Survey through the Surveymonkey web site. The survey can be viewed, filled in and sent back by clicking the following url:

Many thanks in advance for your assistance!

Best regards,

Joe Kott

Hey Joe,

It is good to hear about your research. I don't use Castro Street daily, but about once a month my Family and I ride our bikes down to the Baylands, up Stevens Creek Trail and then stop for lunch on Castro Street. We then ride home on California Avenue. It is about a 12-mile loop. The worst part of it is going down San Antonio Avenue and then getting across 101 in Palo Alto when the Adobe Creek underpass is closed. Hopefully that will be improved someday.

Cheers!

Thanks, Matt, for the comments. Its good to hear from you. As a cyclist myself, I knwow what a challenge some of the raods on the Peninsula can be - especially in overcrossing 101 and other freeways. I really appreciate the encouragement of my research!
