Child care center squeezes through

Original post made on Jun 15, 2007

Further cementing the future of the long-debated child care center proposed for Rengstorff Park, the City Council approved $1.9 million in unforeseen project costs Tuesday before the city's 2006-07 budget was approved.

I think the council is making a mistake. As Matt Pear pointed out, the city will be obligated for further cost overruns, and these overruns are already starting. The city should wait until they have some guarantees of some sort on cost, and a better handle on parking problems. Fifteen spaces doesn't sound like much, but at the Center it IS, and that is only for the STAFF! If we add parents, etc., this whole thing threatens to become a major boondoggle! Further, arguing we should move on because it has taken ten years is like saying "let's pour some bad money in after the good!" No matter how long it takes, the project should move ahead ONLY when we know where we are going!

The city council is moving ahead on the child care center, even though they admit they have unanswered questions (such as parking) and in the face of a sudden overrun of cost (which is unlikely to be the last such overrun). The reason they give seems to be that it has "taken ten years" to get this far, so we must move ahead whether we are ready or not!
To me, that is like saying "previous councils were irresponsible, so now it is our turn!".
I would like to see the child care center move ahead, but only when we have some answers to the nagging questions that remain. How do we contain costs? What about parking (no, let's not defer this question for a future council to cope with)? If it takes a few more years, so be it!
