It’s been a whirlwind of a year so far for Gianni Chiloiro and Angelo Sannino, owners of the Doppio Zero pizzeria chain.
In the winter they opened Vida, a new tapas restaurant down the street from the Mountain View outpost of Doppio Zero. And earlier this month they opened Doppio Zero’s fourth Bay Area location on Laurel Street in San Carlos – with a fifth restaurant slated to open in downtown Campbell this fall.
Doppio Zero opened in the former Otra Vez Mexican Kitchen space June 16. The food offerings are “90% about the same,” with a full beer, wine and cocktails menu. Vida’s mixologist was also enlisted for San Carlos’ cocktail menu, making it “better than any Doppio Zero so far,” Chiloiro said.
“We’ve been in the business about 10 years so far and we’ve been very successful, and so it’s natural to seek other locations,” he said. “People are always in need of good food at a moderate price.”

Known for its Neapolitan pizzas and housemade pastas, the Southern Italian restaurant opened in Mountain View in 2014. Its airy pizza dough takes 72 hours to make because it contains very little yeast, lengthening the time it takes to rise, Chiloiro said.
“I think our concept is working because we have high-quality food, a nice ambience and a price that’s moderate – not expensive but not cheap. So everybody can come in and have a bottle of wine from $45 all the way to $500,” he said.
While the San Carlos Doppio Zero moved into a 3,000-square-foot space that had previously been a restaurant, the Campbell location is in the former Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Store and has been combined with a gym that had been next door. The 4,400-square-foot eatery will be brand new, and Chiloiro hopes it will open by October. He anticipates it will stay open an hour later than San Carlos to account for a younger population.
After such a momentous 2023, what’s next? Chiloiro says they’re planning to open another Doppio Zero next year between San Carlos and San Francisco and a second Vida location in San Jose.
“People are responding well to our concept so we keep doing it,” he said.
