Five restaurants and bars celebrating Cinco de Mayo

Here are five Peninsula spots hosting Cinco de Mayo celebrations on Friday, offering specials from mezcalitas to pork tostadas.

Milagros, Redwood City

Starting at 4 p.m., Milagros will have a live Mariachi band performing and will be debuting food and drink specials, including a new late night menu from 11 p.m. to midnight. They'll also host a boozy brunch with a DJ on Saturday.

La Fonda, Redwood City

La Fonda will have an all-day special menu with gorditas, tostaditas de tinga, guacamole and taquitos de papa as appetizers; pozole verde, mixiotes and chile relleno as mains; and buñuelos for dessert. They're also offering happy hour prices all day for beer, margaritas, mezcalitas, cantaritos and tequilas.

Steins, Mountain View

Steins is offering all-day specials of cochinita pork tostadas and margarita flights with three flavors: classic, black cherry and "jalapeño business.” The restaurant also has 31 beers on tap.

Hop Dogma and Lamas Peruvian and Mexican Cuisine, Half Moon Bay

To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, Hop Dogma Brewing Company will release its Mexican lager, Hard Pour Corn. Visitors who show a receipt from the Lamas Peruvian and Mexican Cuisine food truck can get the beer for $5.

Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay Brewing Company will be offering Cinco de Mayo specials from May 5-7, including sirloin steak tacos with a Santa Maria rub, cilantro, onion and green tomatillo salsa served with rice, beans, pico de gallo and guacamole. They also have watermelon mint margaritas made with watermelon agua fresca, lime juice, Milagro Silver and mint.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo in the barrio beats commemorating it in some gringo-inspired Mexican restaurant.

The best Mexican food and drink are at family-owned establishments where the locals eat.
