Off the Grid food truck markets return, minus one longtime location

After taking a break for the winter, the Bay's food truck market series, Off the Grid, is back for its 2023 season.

Off the Grid returned to Foster City April 5. This year, they’re also offering food truck dining at Stanford University several days a week at two locations, on Campus Drive and Via Ortega.

The initiative began in 2010 to bring street food vendors together and now includes more than 60 weekly public events.

Here are the Peninsula locations that have launched this season so far:

San Bruno
Tuesdays from 5-9 p.m. - The Shops at Tanforan, 1150 El Camino Real, San Bruno

Foster City
Wednesdays from 5-9 p.m. - 650 Shell Blvd., Foster City

San Francisco International Airport
Several days per week (days vary) from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. - 638 W. Field Road

Stanford University
Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. - 735 Campus Drive, Stanford
Several days per week (days vary) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. - 401 Via Ortega, Stanford

Among the food trucks slated to make Peninsula visits in the next few weeks are Miss Subi, El Paisa by Los Alegres, Lilo's Kitchen, Borsch Mobile, Korean Bobcha, Rice Bucket, Sam's Chowder Mobile, Señor Sisig and Capelo's Barbecue.

Notably, Off the Grid does not have any Menlo Park locations listed for this season.

"We are currently not reopening the Menlo Park location this summer but are working with our partners to see what the future of this market could be," Lex Scala, president of Off the Grid, told Peninsula Foodist. "We are always working to bring the best experience to our guests and the small businesses we support."

The city of Menlo Park has permitted Off the Grid to operate through 2025, according to Clay Curtin, the city's public engagement manager.

"To my knowledge we haven’t taken any action to prevent them from returning," Curtin says. "We certainly would like to see them return."

I enjoy food trucks but only when they have staked out their own separate spots on various side streets and parking lots.

A plethora of food trucks parked alongside one another is reminiscent of the food vendors one sees at a county fair or carnival. Very tacky.

I looked reasonably carefully at the events calendar linked in the article, and the Stanford events are ONLY 11am-2pm. There were no 6-8pm events at least for the next month. Did I miss something? Is the Stanford Wednesday event NOT an "off the grid" event?

We drove by the Stanford location at Campus Drive around 6pm on Wednesday and spotted just one food truck in the parking lot there at the time.

One good thing about a pod of trucks is that different people in a group can order from different trucks. It would be nice if they had a county fair there, too :)

Can't wait for off the grid! I love purchasing expensive small portioned meals and eating it while standing up. I'm sure the will be an expectation to tip generously (25%) on their nifty payment iPads because they handed a compostable container to you. Looking forward!

We're missing them in Menlo Park! It's always been a tricky location with the train noise, but I hope they're able to find their way back to Menlo Park soon!
