Three roommates open a new Saratoga brunch spot

Darla Cafe, a new globally inspired restaurant in Saratoga, began its soft launch on March 16. Behind the endeavor are three friends who decided to go into business together.

Nina Summers, Papatsara Chaipong and Mookie Varunthorn, a group of friends from San Francisco, are the co-owners of the restaurant. They're also roommates.

"We think this is our time. It's a good time for us to own something (and) we would like to make it the way we would like," she says.

They've taken on the work of renovating the space, and Summers, who attended art school, says she got to put her painting skills to use mixing the paints for the restaurant.

Their menu draws on Japanese, Thai and Hawaiian cuisine. Among the menu items are jok koong, a congee dish served with shrimp; crispy stuffed French toast, waffles with duck or karaage, loco moco and several eggs Benedict options.

"Our menu is really international," Summers says.

So far, the candied bacon has also been popular. "It's going to be sweet, but at the end, it's going to have some spiciness," she says. "People really love that one."

Currently in its soft-opening phase, the plan is to open the restaurant for dinner service sometime in mid-April, Summers says.

It would be nice if some of these nouveau restaurant entrepreneurs focused more on presenting real American food rather than obscure offerings from abroad.

What is "American food" Fred? I find these restaurants to be a delight and a fusion of the cultures from their background mixed with the flavors that they learned by living here in the Bay area. To me, this is the true American experience.

Real American food includes hamburgers, hot dogs, meat loaf, roast turkey, fried chicken etc. along with mashed/baked/fried potatoes.

Mexican, Italian (including pizza) and traditional Cantonese Chinese food have also becone accepted as American food.

East Indian and Middle Eastern inspired menu offerings are not traditional American cuisine.

And the same applies to sushi though it is very popular nowadays.

Fusion cuisine is the labradoodle of food.

Unlike Italian, Chinese, and Mexican food, except for specific ethnicities and/or those who really enjoy it, East Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine will never be considered mainstream American dining. And the same applies to French food.

Sounds like very creative cuisine and delicious. I really want to try it. For me food is food and I love exploring the entire range of tastes and styles. It's one of the delights of the Bay Area.
