• Sunday, Nov. 19, 1 p.m. at Pie Ranch in Pescadero ($395). The host farmers are Jered Lawson and Nancy Vail of Pie Ranch, the host forager is Todd Spanier of King of Mushrooms, the guest chef is Carlo Espinas and the guest winemaker is Claire Hill of Claire Hill Wines.

The event series runs through Northern California in the late spring, with events planned in Santa Cruz, Carmel, Petaluma, Healdsburg and Soquel, while the tour continues through the summer into the Pacific Northwest, Canada, the Rockies, Europe, Midwest and Northeast before circling back to California in the fall.

Outstanding in the Field was started in 1999 by artist Jim Denevan and is intended to help diners connect with the source of their food and celebrate the people involved with food production, including chefs, fisherpeople, farmers, cheesemakers, vintners and brewers.

Too expensive! Only for rich people with money to burn.

$425.00 can feed my family of 5 (one baby) for a month.

I cannot imagine any sound person spending $400 for a foo-foo dining experience unless they (1) have excess money to burn, (2) are effete food snobs, or (3) are braggarts who enjoy talking about how much they paid for minimal amounts of overpriced menu items.
