State Street Market plans overhaul of its eateries as it cuts ties with Bon Appétit, triggering layoffs

Less than two years after opening, Los Altos' State Street Market, a 20,000-square-food food hall in downtown Los Altos, is ending its contract with the Palo Alto-based Bon Appétit Management Company and plans to bring new vendors into the market hall. Some of the existing vendors will remain, but those aren't being named right now.

"We'll have a more complete vendor list in the coming weeks," says Robert Hindman, managing director at Los Altos Community Investments, the market's developer, in an email.

The decision has triggered layoffs for 45 people, according to documents filed with California's Employment Development Department. To set up for the new vendors, the food hall will close for several weeks in February and March, Hindman says. Los Altos Community Investments was founded by 23andMe’s co-founder and CEO Anne Wojcicki.

The food offerings at State Street Market have been Banks and Braes, Murdoch's, Grains and Greens, B?o Bèi, Little Blue Door and Tin Pot Creamery. Sustainable seafood and wine purveyor Ostro is no longer listed on the State Street Market website. The market's planned anchor restaurant, el Alto by chef Traci Des Jardins, abruptly shuttered in September after only about six months in business, and no explanation was provided for the decision.

Set to replace the departing vendors are Konjoe Burger and Little Sky Bakery, which has been hosting pop-ups at the market since October, according to Hindman. More tenants are expected to be announced soon, and delivery options will be expanding, he adds.

"Bon Appétit Management Company has been honored to collaborate with Los Altos Community Investments on the State Street Market project, which continues to be a thriving part of the Los Altos community," according to the company's communications director, Jenny Slafkosky. "We are working to identify positions for Bon Appétit staff members at our company’s other operations."

State Street Market had a highly anticipated opening in summer 2021, anchored by big-name chefs like Des Jardins; Srijith Gopinathan of Ettan, who opened Little Blue Door in April 2022; and chefs Meichih and Michael Kim, who formerly led the kitchen at Michelin-starred Maum in Palo Alto and opened B?o Bèi as a tribute to their Taiwanese and Korean roots.

That place was too upscale-yuppie & pretentious for my tastes.

The old Liddicoat's on University Avenue was one of the better food courts as was The Old Stanford Barn & The Menu Tree.

All you really need are good Mexican-Chinese-American-Italian menu offerings with no East Indian, Vietnamese, Filipino, or Middle Eastern food counters.

Keep the food menus simple. If one prefers Michelin gourmet or exotic food offerings, there are other options and places to go.

The recipe for failure is not identifying with the majority of the customer base.

Going to a food court should be a simple excursion with popular menu offerings that everyone can relate to with none of that foo-foo fusion stuff.

I feel bad for the staff workers who lost their jobs but not for the proprietors who went a bit overboard with their menu offerings.

Keep things simple and less pretentious.

Dining out whether for lunch or dinner is getting very expensive & restaurant proprietors need to acknowledge this factor by offering value-added menu items with flair & creativity while keeping an eye on overhead & food costs.

If they cannot, expect more closures.

I miss places like the former Oasis in Menlo Park & its Los Altos affiliate, The Boardwalk.

Add the now defunct Harry's Hofbrau in Mountain View as well.

Fusion-themed food courts are for those seeking a bit more & it's no wonder that some venues have lost vendors because countless Americans prefer the basics when it comes to casual dining.

State of Mind Pizza in Los Altos is just what we needed. More of that type of place please!

In the Mountain View/Los Altos/Menlo Park areas, Round Table or Mountain Mike's cannot be beat for a genuine American-style pizza.

Over-fusioned pizza offerings generally miss the boat because they are overly inundated with 'cultural' addendums.

I think one of the biggest issues of the food court was the wine by the glass selection - really awful. It's a lovely bar area and even great outdoor seating - would be nice enjoy a good glass of wine, along with a tasty appetizer or meal. I personally would have frequented it more often if that was an option.

Gayle's Bakery and Rosticcera 504 Bay Ave Capitola or something similar is what we need in Los Altos.

Check it out!

Would love it if they changed out the chairs! Metal chairs + concrete floors = so loud!!! And reduced the prices so teens could afford to eat there too.
