Chicken tapioca dumplings and Hat Yai fried chicken: Daly City's Kan Kiin is open and serving Thai comfort food

A new Daly City restaurant offering Thai comfort food – including brunch – amidst elegant surroundings quietly opened its doors for business last weekend.

Kan Kiin Brunch and Thai Eatery in Daly City has opened in the former home of Bangkok Garden Thai Cuisine after four months of renovations. Today, the restaurant, led by chefs Tee Atthapon Inkhong and Navin Tintuksiri, boasts a bright interior with hanging plants, orchids and wood accents.

Unlike its predecessor, Kan Kiin offers both brunch and Thai comfort food. The brunch menu includes breakfast items with a Thai twist, such as the Southern Thailand dish Hat Yai crispy fried chicken with a vanilla waffle, matcha pancakes and Jok crispy pork belly, a rice porridge with pork belly, a poached egg, ginger, mushrooms and green onions served with doughnut sticks.

The dinner menu also highlights Thai comfort food dishes. Appetizers include saku, chicken-stuffed tapioca pearls served with fruit, Wagyu larb lettuce wraps and a khao yum herbal rice salad with toasted coconuts and herbs. Main dishes include the hor mok seafood curry custard, which is steamed in a banana leaf, the kai palo pork belly stew and Dungeness crab fried rice served in a coconut shell.

Inkhong also owns several other local eateries including Mangrove Kitchen and Sun and Moon in San Francisco and Roji Ramen in Oakland.

Printed on Kan Kiin's drink menu is a quote from the late Anthony Bourdain that highlights the restaurant's pride in its cuisine: "To be fortunate enough to visit Thailand – to eat in Thailand – is a deep dive into a rich, many-textured, very old culture of flavors and colors ranging far beyond the familiar spectrum. Given our limited time on this Earth and the sheer magnificence, the near limitless variety of sensory experiences readily available in this country, you don't want to miss ANY of it," it says.
