Viral cookie chain Crumbl Cookies opens first Peninsula store Friday

Uploaded: Jul 20, 2022
By Stephanie Gerson

In 2017, cousins Jason McGowan and Sawyer Hemsley started selling Crumbl’s signature milk chocolate chip cookie out of a storefront in Logan, Utah. Since then, the popular cookie business has rapidly expanded to 370 bakeries across the country, including a new location in Foster City opening on Friday, July 22.

Crumbl's 4-pack of cookies is packaged in an instantly recognizable pink box.

Crumbl attributes its success to its signature oversized cookies, rotating weekly flavors, delivery services and social media presence. Since the company joined TikTok in 2021, the #crumblreview trend has gone viral, with thousands of users sharing videos trying Crumbl’s flavors like chocolate mallow cupcake, key lime pie and s’mores. Crumbl also sells pints of ice cream to accompany its cookie selections.

“With a weekly-rotating menu, Crumbl takes every dessert imaginable and packs it into its perfect cookie form,” COO and co-founder Sawyer Hemsley said in a statement.

Nezar Ateyeh, who co-owns the Foster City store with his wife Nora, grew up in San Mateo County and is a College of San Mateo alum. The store will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, July 28, at 5 p.m. to celebrate the opening of Crumbl’s first location on the Peninsula. Crumbl Foster City will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays.
