I am a covid coward – and also angry at anti-vaxxers

Uploaded: Jul 27, 2021
The reason I obtained my covid shot the second day it was locally available was because I am a coward. I don’t want to suffer through the corona virus --a terrible disease.

After the headaches, chills and fever, muscle pain and loss of taste, the lungs get clogged which causes a person to cough constantly and results in breathing difficulties for days and nights, constantly gasping for air. Once hospitalized, a patient might need a ventilator’s wide endotracheal tube stuck down his throat for days, which may assist in breathing. Sometimes it does not.

I don’t want to die that way.

And so not only can I not comprehend why more than 100 million Americans (nearly half the population), e.g., are refusing to take the vaccine, but I also can’t understand why some individuals, who claim their freedom is being infringed upon by health officials telling them what to do, insist their freedom is the most important consideration. Trump is saying it is a test of loyalty. But their chances of getting COVID-19 increase. Do they want to die “that way?”

To me, they simply seem selfish – caring only about themselves, and not others around them. Many of the unvaccinated are carriers, and their ability to go wherever they want can cause others to get corona virus. The vaccinated are now sublimating their new mask-free freedoms to the unvaccinated, e.g., masks are required for all attending an indoor meeting.

My criticism certainly does not extend to those who, for valid medical reasons, have a rightful concern about getting the vaccine. But some have other issues.

You’ve heard them – some say they don’t trust the vaccine yet, even though almost no one in the millions inoculated has died from a vaccination. Others call it a government plot to control their bodies. Some women say the vaccine might damage their DNA or ovaries, or may hurt their child if and when they decide to have a baby. But what if they get the virus and die, and never have that baby? Or lose their so-called freedom when they are in a grave?

A big part of the problem, we are learning, is the disinformation about the disease and the vaccine that is spreading rapidly. And the bigger issue is that this disinformation on social media that is prevalent in America, Europe and now Asia. This disinformation contains vicious, dangerous lies because many believe them and remain unvaccinated.

What should we do? President Biden has consistently encouraged us to get vaccinated, and now we now have enough vaccines for everyone in our country. But it’s time for him to put away the carrot and use his stick a.

I like France’s President Macron path toward enforcement. He is telling the unvaccinated French that it’s okay if you don’t want the vaccine, but until you get one you can’t go to theaters or music performances, can’t get on buses or subways or planes, can’t go to restaurants to take-out food places, can’t go to sporting events, etc. But have a great life, he implies.

I think it’s time for Biden to adopt a similar approach -- only I would make it harsher. I would adopt Macron’s rules and require us to carry around our covid vaccine cards (the way we carry around our drivers’ licenses), and we use that as an entrance card to all of the above.

I would insist all businesses impose a covid vaccine requirement for employment, which includes working from home. The same for high schools, colleges and universities. I might even go so far as requiring a vaccine for any unemployment check from the government. The vaccines are free.

The new D variant of the virus is spreading like wildfire. Once more people get it, the chances for more variants will increase. Scientists have already named two future ones – the Gamma and Lambda variants. Scientists say we need everyone in this country to get vaccinated, which will substantially diminish the risk of getting infected.

But the bigger problem is a global one – having available enough vaccines around the world, which seems like an impossible task. Yet some countries are working on it, including African nations, and the more people are vaccinated, the better it will be. The U.S. is starting to ship out vaccine supplies.

With this new outbreak, I suspect that we all are sitting on the edge of our chairs, wondering away. Will we need a booster? Probably, but we got booster shots when we were young, so that’s nothing new. Will we be protected from these new variants by our current vaccines? We don’t know. Will scientists get a quick fix for these new variants? They don’t know.

All we can do is our best to protect ourselves --- and help each other. And hope.

Democracy.
What is it worth to you?

I am from France where the % rate of vaccination is 37%, far below Germany at 43% and the U.K. at 52%.

I believe the U.S. is currently at 48.5%.

Divisiveness is a trademark of human existence and in the United States (as well as in other modern countries) there will be a sizable divide between the vaxxed and the unvaxxed...for reasons of their own.

It is not for us to judge but to except the human condition for what is is...an ironic absurdity of existence.

Once you come to accept those terms, life either becomes more relevant or irrelevant.

Thanks for writing -- your viewpoint is interesting.

I understand differences always exist between people, and I am happy we are able to disagree. But to me, the seriousness of the spread of the coronavirus in the U.S. and around the world is a life-threatening problem for all of us. Thousands, millions of us, may die, Tolerance and understanding is fine at times, but not when global life is at stake.

Good article, Diana!

I have a business proposal. Set a date, and let unvaccinated people know they can get the vaccine for free until that date. After that date, any medical COVID costs for an unvaccinated person will be borne by that unvaccinated person, and not by insurance, government or the community.

Getting the vaccine is not an issue of politics or cowardliness, it is an issue with IQ.

The vaccines are working - those who get sick have mild symptoms and are unlikely to be hospitalized or die. Santa Clara County and the Bay Area as a whole are one of the most vaccinated area of the country. Yet numbers are rising here, so why? According to one tv pundit, it is because the unvaccinated are socializing and passing it between them. Is it just this or is it because of something else? Are these new cases coming from grocery stores, work places, restaurants, or other gathering places? Are camps, vacations, museums and other gatherings problem areas?

I am fully vaccinated. I no longer fear the virus. I do fear the over reaction of media and government rules. If someone feels uncomfortable near me I will wear my mask to make them feel safer, otherwise, I do not see anything to fear for myself or those I live with who are also vaccinated.

The problem is that the vaccines promised return to normal. Now normal will be a different normal, a more cautious normal, a precaution driven normal, but our lives must return to being worthwhile once again.

If those who choose not to be vaccinated for reasons other than their health reasons, they are quite free to be unvaccinated, but they should stay in their homes and not be part of the general population. They are their own worse enemies, not me.

We have to make life worth living. We have to be able to socialize, to work, to mingle, to integrate and we have to be willing to face the real risk, albeit of getting mildly sick for a day or two, that we just might be unlucky enough to catch a droplet from a passing stranger who is vaccinated just as much as anybody else. I think the risk is low enough to resume living instead of hiding, instead of isolating, instead of being afraid. Yes, I might get a mild dose of the virus, but I might get cancer or a heart attack also and I would rather finish living my life with some pleasure and joy beforehand.

It helps to keep Covid in a healthy perspective. The pandemic has been a true litmus test as to how Americans handle a health crisis. From the seriously paranoid to it's a hoax and everything in between. For those of us who are fully vaccinated, life goes on.

Biggest obstacle to getting to herd immunity and no longer allowing the virus to mutate to more contagious and scary forms is, as you said, the ridiculous amount of lies and disinformation out there.
And it is absolutely not clear as to what to do about that.
I saw something today that bothered me tremendously. Someone posting some ridiculous claims about vaccines being toxic and killing 80% of vaccinated within 6 months. This is on Facebook. There is a little disclaimer on that post by Facebook's independent fact checkers, saying this is false information. And then there are comments to teh effect of - well, if these fact checkers picked up on this post it must be true!
How does one fight this stuff? I mean, really?

And just to add one more layer. To these of us fully vaccinated, we can relax a little and live our lives, as Jennifer suggests. But wait... many of us have children under 12 who cannot be vaccinated yet. Adn even though they generally tolerate the disease better than adults, they can get very sick and they can die. I'm fully vaccinated and I can't relax. And I am very angry at people who are putting others - these that legitimately cannot get the jab either because of the age or true medical conditions - at risk.

People who are vaccinated do not know how much immunity they have. Their immune systems can be comprised. And the vaccines are not 100% effective.

If you understand epidemiology, you would know that in the context of the Delta variant and the current vaccine, we have to get almost everybody vaccinated.

For some unknown reason, you want to provide cover for the unvaccinated. You are almost as irresponsible as they are.

Insurance companies could require subscribers to be vaccinated or provide a physician's exception. This could be a requirement for insurance coverage. This could include Medicaid, Medicare, and ACA.

"The vaccinated are now sublimating their new mask-free freedoms to the unvaccinated, e.g., masks are required for all attending an indoor meeting." I think that's something I didn't fully appreciate until now. With the Delta variant, vaccinated people have a somewhat higher chance of getting infected ... but it almost certainly will be a minor illness. The biggest threat is unwittingly passing it on to an unvaccinated person - something no responsible person would want. And even when vaccinated people avoid getting the bug - it's socially awkward to be masked when there are unmasked people. So a vaccinated person not wearing a mask unwittingly make ever so less comfortable for an unvaccinated person to wear one - when they need to. (If you have traveled far outside of the Bay Area, you will quickly feel like an oddball for wearing a mask.) The solution is obvious - almost everyone should get vaccinated.

1. The real Covid cowards are the ones who won't get vaccinated(with the exception of those who have a legitimate medical reason not to). They are holding everyone back from going back to normal and are a menace to public health. Many also worship “the former guy" who did not utilize the pandemic playbook and was the secondary cause of this national disaster. It's pathetic.
2. The bigger problem is not that vaccines aren't yet available around the world. The bigger problem is the ruling class has been subversively adopting a “herd immunity" policy. Notice statements about “how we all must learn to live with the virus." Notice how mask mandates in the U.S. were dropped right before the summer travel season. Notice how borders have never been shut down. Notice how schools are reopening despite the rapid spread of a deadly pathogen so that parents can drop their children off and go to work. There has been no coordinated global effort to combat the pandemic and we are about 18 months in now. It's all about the economy and corporate profits.
3. Pfizer announced data today that a booster shot they have been working on will be effective against the Delta variant. We will all have to now take a 1/2/3 dose.
4. This is not about “government rules" or taking freedoms away. Do not conflate a public health issue with issues of government overreach or the taking away of personal freedoms.
5. More vaccine mandates will be coming soon once the vaccines become fully approved by the FDA. Mandating them without FDA approval puts businesses on shaky ground for being sued.
6. Yes. We are now living in the “new normal." Historically, pandemics have taken up to two years. Things won't be actually better until January 2022 at the earliest. They just don't want to admit it. I also wish they would pinpoint where transmission is taking place.
7. @Chris-I agree. The comments from that user range from off-base, cringeworthy, and awful or a combination of all three.

The existential question is: why are we here?

Whether one believes in God, or not, it seems to me the only substantive answer is: to help each other.

Choosing to vaccinate, helps oneself, but also helps others. It's a choice which acknowledges one's responsibility not only *for* oneself, but *to* others.

Choosing not to vaccinate places not only oneself at a high risk of chronic disease or death, but others, too. Such a choice is nihilistic; it means one believes life is pointless.

I guess choosing to place others at risk, is some kind of logical result of choosing to believe life is pointless. But it's not any logic I understand.

Does this mean that if you are not vaccinated, you are uninsurable? How about for non-COVID illnesses? Does that mean the unvaccinated could get a discount on their insurance premiums since COVID-related care is not covered.

How is that selfish? To be honest, simply makes no sense to me.
Why would you want to suffer, be sick, or even die. How is that selfish?
Human, prudent, normal, caring about yourself, are other adjectives IMO.
SELFISH IS the idiots not being vaccinated. What if they expose someone
to Covid? What if they get sick and drain insurance assets of their own
or my taxes to keep them alive? What if the unvaccinated die and leave
their family destitute, without a father, mother, income earner. What
if their children now are completely desperate and different lives because
their family member did not want to be vaccinated.
Ya listen to Trump, he said no to vaccination, not only got it himself but his
family as well. Then they received best medical assistance in the entire world.
The lying Bum..... And he knew in Feb 2020 about covid and its dangers. He was recorded confessing this to a famous investigative author. RECORDED!!!
Man up, being selfish is being unvaccinated on purpose.
Oh and also is endangering self, and others and loved ones.....

Diana Diamond's trust in government is heart-warming but not convincing. With the amount of false, misleading, or politicized information coming from various politicians and government sources having to do with the Wuhan virus you can hardly blame people for questioning the level of danger in these as yet unapproved vaccines. Valid questions remain about blood clots, heart enlargement, deaths or undiscovered long-term effects of mRNA biological agents, previously referred to as cell therapy and now redefined as vaccines. People may say that the odds of suffering from any of those are small. But so is winning the lottery--and yet government encourages people to enter it.

@Ozymandias Thanks for keeping it civil. Perhaps there needs to be more lottery prizes for the vaccine. In a civil society, you pay someone to get what you want. Perhaps the ones desiring more vaccinations should ante up more of the lottery prize money. If the chance of winning is like 50% or more, perhaps more will get vaccinated.

@Ozymandias,

Almost THREE BILLION doses have been administered worldwide, with an infinitesimal number of adverse reactions. The first public COVID vaccination was given eighteen months ago and the clinical trials months before that. I think we all won the lottery, it is just that some people still haven't collected their winnings.

The Biden administration's messaging on vaccinations is ATTROCIOUS. They are now saying that vaxxed people have to wear masks. What motivation does an unvaxxed person have to change her status now?

Also, Kamala spent last fall repeatedly questioning the efficacy of the “Trump vaccine."

For whatever reasons, 30% of this country will not get vaxxed. This is not a red/blue issue. Look at the higher percentage of non-vaxxed people among minority groups in the inner cities throughout the country.

Part of Biden's current vax approach is to get vaxxed people such as yourself to try to SHAME the unvaxxed they know. It won't work.

The last thing we need now is another lockdown and mask mandate.

There have been too much junk peddled in an unbroken stream since the beginning. Authorities have lost credibility. Instead of informing and advising the public, instead of helping people make the best decisions for themselves and being very precise (as we expect people of science to be) we've gotten daily test numbers, case numbers, alarms about personal protective equipment and respirator shortages, National lockdowns and mandates for masking which probably, in most cases wasn't a good idea (masked while jogging!). Masks for three year olds. Of course the worst idea, pushed by the media, by the Governor, by the local health departments closed down the economy and did great (unnecessary) harm to our country. No some want to do it all again.
In a crisis, we need to be precise and do what is most necessary with maximum effort in an informed, targeted fashion. Today, people are fearful of the big Delta variant - WHAT ACTUAL EFFECT IS IT HAVING IN WHICH HOSPITALS AND TO WHOM? The authorities and the media counted all sorts of things as Covid and failed to mention, by the way, that many of the worst cases had age of medical complications that ran up the casualty counts. Right now, the biggest need is for everyone to pitch in and restore normalcy - back to school, back to work - let's put this behind us. The vaccine is a remarkable story and a remarkable breakthrough technology with near flawless rollout to billions. Patriotism and community is scarce these days but people need to get beyond their hesitancies, roll up their sleeves and get a jab. Duty calls. [Portion removed.]

Come on people. The story on this has always been clear. Vaccinations do not necessarily prevent infection, they are just remarkably good at preventing serious illness and death. You can be vaccinated, still get an infection, possibly even unaware, and pass it along to someone who may die of it. THAT is why even vaccinated people are being asked to wear masks, in certain situations, as the much more infectious Delta variant spreads.

GUILT-SHAMING. That's the approach President Mush-Mind and Diana Diamond (and others) are using. Anyone remember being on a sports team in high school and the coach saying, “If anyone is not giving 100%, everyone on the team has to run a lap." Yep.

The messaging of the White House is: “Even though you're vaccinated, you have to wear a mask because your unvaxxed neighbor won't get a shot. Go put pressure on her if you want to drop your mask." This will not work.

If Biden wants to lose the House and Senate in a big way in November 2022, all he has to do is ask for another lockdown.

One other thought: if Biden can call voter ID laws “Jim Crow on steroids," how will he be able to ask for vaccine mandates in minority communities? He'll have a hard time squaring that circle.

No, your neighbor may be a child or immunocompromised. That's why it took herd immunity to wipe out polio and smallpox and drive a host of other diseases underground. Yes, there is shaming. Sadly, because violating a social contract is, by definition, shameful. It may be different in other times and other places, but right now we are facing a virus that has resulted in the early deaths of more than 600,000 people in the US alone. Being anti-vax is like being a pacifist during WWII. You just have to stick to your values and ignore the hate.

Losing the House and Senate was actually the former guy. Biden is a master politician and not a twice impeached failed former real estate agent that get this...actually lost the House and the Senate...so that won't happen to Biden. You will respect your Democratic President!

Here's the alarming news tonight about the Delta Variant and why the CDC masking guidance changed reported by the Washington Post:

The delta variant of the coronavirus appears to cause more severe illness than earlier variants and spreads as easily as chickenpox, according to an internal federal health document that argues officials must “acknowledge the war has changed."

The document strikes an urgent note, revealing the agency knows it must revamp its public messaging to emphasize vaccination as the best defense against a variant so contagious that it acts almost like a different novel virus, leaping from target to target more swiftly than Ebola or the common cold.

It cites a combination of recently obtained, still-unpublished data from outbreak investigations and outside studies showing that vaccinated individuals infected with delta may be able to transmit the virus as easily as those who are unvaccinated. Vaccinated people infected with delta have measurable viral loads similar to those who are unvaccinated and infected with the variant.

If people don't want to get vaccinated they are now making a decision to take their chances with a potentially fatal pathogen that moves from host to host quicker than the Ebola virus and spreads as easily as the chickenpox. If you need someone to have a talk with you, I would advise talking to your doctor about the safe and effective vaccines instead of concerning yourself about the silly nonsensical perception of the White House “guilt shaming" or blaming the greatest blogger of our time...well except when she fixates a little too much on the PA police...Diana Diamond.

Please look at Mr. VOPA's next to last paragraph. Seriously, how is this different than what the blue team used to make fun of the red team for doing: 'I don't need any stinking published findings, I feel what I say is right.' Steve Colbert had a whole satiric personae based on this. That was the right--just making up things and pretending it proved your point. "May be able to" is the same--exactly, as "may not be able to." Importantly, does the vaccine work or not? By forcing people who are fully vaxxed to wear masks again, aren't we telling the unvaxxed, 'forget it! the vaccine isn't that great, you were right? Finally, if the point is persuading the unvaxxed to vax, how effective do you think all the angry, self-righteous, exaggerating, finger-wagging coming from blue click-bait media is going to be in this regard? How about not at all?

StarSpring, there are medical and religious exceptions to taking the vaccine. Further, it has not even been approved by the FDA. This is what the left use to call inconvenient truth... Personally, I have made the decision to vax. But really, I am somewhat limited in ability or even desire to tell others what to do. Do such orders usually work for you?

@JBS, I have not heard any "orders". With 3 billion shots already given world wide, 300 million shots in the US. 600,000 unvaccinated dead in the US, the formal FDA approval is a paperwork paper tiger.

The people who are medically unable to receive the vaccine are the reason the vaccinated (and potentially still infectable) need to continue to wear masks as advised. I'll still mask up to protect those who claim religious exemptions, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

In a lightning storm I expect everyone to move away from high points and conductors. Don't you?

How's the contact tracing app doing? I haven't heard it mentioned since we were all told to put it on our phones. I haven't been pinged yet.

The coronavirus is rapidly mutating and new variants may be immune to the current vaccines.

Are we going to become eternal human pin cushions with non-FDA approved vaccines and boosters or simply let nature and fate take its course?

Though fully vaccinated, I am not betting the house on vaccine protection or that the coronavirus will ever go away.

As for those who have chosen not to get vaccinated, that's their choice.

Maybe another vaccine lottery is warranted.

"As for those who have chosen not to get vaccinated, that's their choice."

And they should bear responsibility for their choice and be liable for all the costs and other damages to those they willfully infected.

Choice without taking responsibility = adolescence. And even that girl who kept urging her boyfriend to commit suicide is sitting in jail -- just like Tucker Carlson should be!

Those who now complain about having to wear facemasks because of the unvaccinated were the ones who told us that wearing a facemask wasn't much of an imposition.

It's an imposition now that we all have to put up with, take the brunt of, and bear the burden of the shall we call them, “plague enthusiasts" that won't get vaccinated (such as yourself from a previous post!).

“undiscovered long-term effects of mRNA biological agents, previously referred to as cell therapy and now redefined as vaccines."

Total Tucker misinformation and total nonsense. [Portion removed.]

Finally, masking for the vaccinated is a good idea now anyway as the CDC found that the vaccinated can pass the Delta variant to others.

Closed borders might have curtailed the spread of the new Delta variant.

And by 'closed' I mean absolutely no entry into the United States by outsiders including diplomats, business travelers, tourists, relatives from abroad, and athletes.

The coronavirus emanated from outside areas and sources.

Concurring...America does not need any more global illnesses or socio-political problems from other countries.

Let the U.N. handle these issues.

If you are vaccinated you do NOT owe masking to protect the unvaccinated. If you decided to skip the shots, you accepted the risk - for whatever reason - of getting the virus. Every American can get the shots FREE.
The mere fact that people may test positive after being vaccinated does not mean the shots do not work. So why are we now back to masks?

There are those kind of selfish people who are very fearful and conservative. Since they naturally are submissive to each and every time they are told what to do, they yearn for the capability of forcing the same limitations on others. Think of former hall monitors back in school shouting down the hall, then as adult, they are crusading to ban tackle football, they even have little white flags to stick in kids' pockets! Well, fast forward, and somehow they believe masks were the reason they defeated a mean fat bully named Trump. So...forever, they will nostalgically remask to relive that glory, perhaps they never even took them off, even in their homes taking showers. Now, with another opportunity to tsk tsk finger wag?

Getting the vaccine: Just do it!

Wearing the mask: Just do it!

What the semi-enlightened pro-vaxers in Palo Alto (and other blue locales) don't seem to get...

The holistic/wellness Left and the "Don't tread on me" Right both concure that vaccines are not 'natural' and that the body is capable of healing itself 'naturally'.

So let's blame both the New Age/whole earth types + ignorant red state mentalities for the overall reluctance to get fully vaccinated.

Hippies and rednecks united.

StarSpring, the Buddhists believe in the cycle of Samsara, that means everyone will experience suffering many times and one cannot do anything about it, so should accept it.

This is also a tenet of Hinduism which may explain the spread of the East Indian Delta variant.

Fate and destiny.

To unvaccinated people who have no underlying medical conditions:

Please read, open your eyes, your mind, your brain, be sensible and wise, and please learn from the unvaccinated patients who are now fighting for their lives and feel terrible about their former resistance towards the preventive COVID vaccines. Be protective of yourself and others. Be respectful, be smart, not dumb.Losing lives to COVID is no longer necessary!

I am also very angry Diana...at the various encumbrances & inconveniences, the global deaths & illnesses attributable to the coronavirus, and also the cavalier attitude among the unvaxxed.

That said, I am most angry at the PRC who covered up this biological danger early on and allowed it to spread worldwide.
