The Fish Market to remain in Palo Alto despite sale of property to developer

The Fish Market has no plans to depart from its Palo Alto location on El Camino Real, the company confirmed in the wake of the property's recent sale to the Bay Area developer Acclaim Companies.

"I do not anticipate there being any change in our operations for the foreseeable future," President Dwight Colton said. "Our lease goes on for several more years. It's been in place prior to the sale, and we expect that it will continue, and that we'll operate in Palo Alto as long as we can."

The Fish Market recently reopened its Palo Alto location to the public after a temporary, four-month-long closure. The restaurant made the decision to shut its doors ahead of the second wave of pandemic-prompted shutdowns amid the winter spike in coronavirus cases at the end of 2020; it is currently operating Wednesday through Sunday, Colton said.

"We made a good size investment in reopening the Palo Alto restaurant, and our intention is to get a return on that investment," he said. The Fish Market has yet to speak directly with Acclaim Companies, Colton said, but expects to do so soon.

The property leased by The Fish Market's San Mateo location was also recently sold; upon hearing news of that sale, customers "assumed we were going out of business immediately," Colton said. "That was certainly not the case" in San Mateo, nor is it in Palo Alto, he added. In light of the sale of the El Camino Real property, which was first reported by the Mercury News, The Fish Market has received inquiries from customers and team members alike about the status of the restaurant.

"My belief, having talked extensively with our former landlords up until a few days ago, is they wanted (our lease) to continue on under the new ownership as well," Colton said. "We can assure the public there's no risk of The Fish Market Palo Alto, or any other location, going away any time soon."

There are a huge number of real estate transactions taking place in the county by out-of-state companies. We are seeing hotels going into bankruptcy throughout the county. Restaurants. shopping centers. For Palo Alto when a transaction takes place on ECR you have to question how these businesses get so out of control that they end up selling. Especially long standing businesses. My take is you make the surrounding street scene as unappealing as possible. Something that keeps people just driving by but not stopping. The UGH factor.

They have two hour parking signs on ECR between Stanford Avenue and Oregon. That protects the businesses in that shopping area. Then go beyond down ECR and there are few parking signs - now a place to park a broken down RV. Also some broken down buildings which have been empty prior to the covid. Signs of decay and lack of protection for businesses in this city. Who wants to stop there? A number of auto theft issues in that area.
Glad to see that the Fish Company will stay until a better offer comes along. But look to the whole picture - Town and Country shopping center in transition. Look at your street scene - what is it saying to keep business open. This city has a job to keep the street scenes clean and attractive for the businesses on the streets in this city.

Agreed on the street scene, or parking scene around The Fish Market. El Camino Real near The Fish Market/McDonalds is always parked with campers/RVs. Every few days, they clear out but they return and the cycle continues.
Plus, the road condition near the Fish Market is terrible as well, potholes and bumps.

As a general rule - when you are trying to drive down the purchase cost of a property a big company can subsidize the UGH Factor that promotes a negative reaction for anyone looking to do business in that location - a tourist, a local resident, a new resident. They will avoid anything that does not look inviting and safe. That is what you are seeing from one end of the city to the other end. Put a bunch of broken down RV's in a location and you are now in UGH country. And worse - you have a bunch of non-profits who are trying to protect and promote this debacle. WHO funds them?

The new owner and city need to step in a start producing more street signs which exclude broken down vehicles in their business location. Town and Country - are you paying attention? Trader Joe's is not going to save you from UGH territory. You are not cute - people do not want to encounter strange business contortions in their day to day activities. The T&C in Sunnyvale is gone - replaced by a huge building.

The rhetoric reminds of how the Milk Pail market over in Mountain view was supposed to stay in business after redevelopment.

President Hotel - what's happening? All of the blogs on that topic are closed to further comments. I went today to check it out expecting to see a Boutique hotel. NOT. All of the street level shops have left and the door is locked. It does not look like anything has happened here. Does any one have a status? If that is suppose to be a hotel then someone better get going on making it presentable. I would expect any business on University to look presentable and ready to open.

And that Hana House - who thought that up? Worse idea ever - did the city chase out the Border's Books which was always jumping? We should get an update on this since it prompted a lot of discussion.
