Palo Alto's beloved Prolific Oven is back with home baking kits

Uploaded: May 1, 2020
If you've been mourning the loss of The Prolific Oven's chocolate rum cake since the 39-year-old Palo Alto bakery closed last summer, despair no longer.

The bakery launched last week home baking kits, providing customers with all the ingredients and instructions to recreate its popular baked goods in their own kitchens.

"One wonderful thing we are seeing since shelter in place is the dramatic increase in baking at home,” the owners wrote in an email announcement. "While it brings us great joy to see your baked goods on Instagram, it did make us miss baking, and miss being a part of your lives incredibly. That's why we are so, so excited to announce baking kits we'll be putting together to help each other get through these difficult times."

The first kits, for Prolific Oven's chocolate cake with chocolate icing and chocolate chip cookies, quickly sold out. The bakery plans to replenish for next week, in time for Mother's Day on May 10, with additional kits to make either rum or mocha cream cheese icing for the chocolate cake, said Regina Chan. Chan's parents, Henry and Sophia Chan, bought The Prolific Oven at 550 Waverley St. from Harriet Spier in 1996. The family closed the longtime bakery last August, citing a "severe" labor shortage and increasing cost of doing business in the Bay Area.

The baking kits will be available for pickup from the bakery's former Sunnyvale location (which now houses Chan's restaurant, TAP'T Beer & Kitchen) or can be delivered locally for orders more than $50. (For Mother's Day orders, pickup is available on May 7.) If there's more demand, they plan to expand pickup and delivery capacity, and will consider potentially shipping the kits.

For more information and to order the baking kits, go to prolific-oven.square.site. The website and Prolific Oven's Facebook will be updated when new kits go live.

Hi
Who has ordered, baked and tasted? Is it even as nearly good as the original from the bakery?
$60 is a lot for a cake kit.

Thanks - look forward to your reviews

Interesting idea, but the chocolate layer cake kit ($36, frosting additional) requires you to have two 10-inch round cake pans. If you didn't bake a lot, you would be unlikely to own these, and if you did, then you would have flour, sugar, and eggs on hand already. Basically, you would be paying for the recipe.

Dear Ms Chan,

You made my day! Prolific Oven lives on! I do hope you will add a few types of cakes to your list, double chocolate doesn't do it for me, but Carrot Cake! Oh my! Nobody does carrot cake like Prolific Oven. And yes, I'm willing to buy and grate my own fresh carrots!

I bought the double chocolate cake mix and the rum cream cheese frosting just before Mother's Day.. $54. Made it myself. Bottom line - this was the best home made cake I ever had! Prolific Oven is very good, but when the cake is fresh out of the oven - it was fabulous. Quite expensive - though. A 10 inch version fo the cake from Prolific Oven would have probably been the same price, and since I baked it myself, I got a much fresher product! I will defintely do this again.

For at least 30 years, every birthday in our family has included the incomparable Prolific Oven Lemon Poppyseed Cake. Is there any chance we could convince Ms. Chan to make a kit for that one? My husband's birthday is coming up in July and it would be wonderful to surprise him with that very special cake.
